tell me about various motorcycle engines

im looking for things under 610ccs, with good power to weight ratios, the lighter the better

something with at least 40 crank hp, nice packaging, preferrably fuel injection but doesnt have to be

does the buell blast engine take well to modding? can you recommend something like a thumper that does?

this engine is something id like to get by early spring to start engine development for next year's formula SAE car, as this year is already a total wash... we've been using a cbr600 f4i engine for the past few years and the seniors this year want to turbocharge it... what a pig its going to be

let the comments flow

any year FI gsxr 600 motor. Parts are cheap and everywhere. You can find ported heads, cams, all kinds of crap for it.

Read online all the petitions against the blast by owners who had the motor blow up under normal usage.

I did formula SAE for 2 years, we were using a F2 powerplant and things went well. Last year they got a 2004 R6 engine out of a wrecked bike and i heard they had all kinds of problems, i dont know if it was because of the wrecked engine or because of the sweet crew they must have had working on it. If i was going to choose a new powerplant the new 2007 600RR looks pretty sweet, more compact, lighter, and more powerful. Good luck with your funding on a school budget for that one though.

as far as gsxr 600 motors, they got faster in 2001, (and more expensive used)
there are a lot of inexpensive 97-00 gsxr 600 motors around as a popular swap was to install a 750 motor in the 600 chassis. but basically you could hop up your up your 97-00 with cams/pistons and it would probably be as fast as a stock newer gsxr 600 motor.

we already have a 600 f4i engine that we've been using for the past few years

the displacement limit is 610cc, and i already know 600s are fast but they are just not something we want to stick with for next year... to give you an idea all of the top teams are using gs500 engines, i know its crazy power isnt everything
