Since you offered. What the hell is the difference? My guess is that so you guys could feel more important. In fact I would put something like "mostly sunny" and "sunny" into the same group. Can you get burned real quick? Do you need to wear sunglasses? It's sunny...even if there's a cloud or 2 in the sky.

I'm bettin it's based on sky occlusion.... at least that's what it was for aviation weather to tell if the skies are clear, broken, scattered...... and so forth. But I could be way off.

I'll break it down for ya!

Mostly Sunny = Outdoor drinking weather.
Mostly Cloudy = Indoor drinking weather.
Partly Cloudy = Freedom of choice.

Yea...sorry but that's a BS comparison right there. Everyone knows that you can drink outside in any weather.

Agreed! These are certainly not a hard & fast rules we're talking about. More like a loose set of circumstances open to personal interpretation. Kinda like weather forecasts

It's based on what fraction of the sky is covered in clouds.

Clear/Mostly sunny skies means 0-1/8 of the sky is covered.
Scattered/Partly cloudy means 2/8-4/8 of the sky is covered.
Broken/Mostly cloudy means 5/8-7/8 of the sky is covered.
Overcast means 8/8 of the sky is covered.

CLR, SCT, BKN, OVC are actual meteorological terms we use in aviation to describe the layers of clouds for pilots. They are accompanied by an altitude in the weather report.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Yea I recall learning all those abbreviations. The whole weather/wind report is abbreviated! I think just about every word took me a while to get the hang of reading.

Yep. Here's a current METAR.

KMCI 212053Z 13009KT 10SM SCT040 OVC075 17/13 A2956

Can anyone translate this for me (as in how would it sound on an ATIS)?

Pretty close. MCI Kansas City... so the ATIS would sound like this:

Kansas City Airport ATIS information delta (whatever letter), time two zero five three zulu. Wind one three zero at niner, visibility one zero. Sky conditions, four thousand scattered, ceiling seven thousand five hundred overcast. Altimeter two niner five six.
