brown recluse

I'm pretty sure I just found a brown recluse spider in my garage. it's was in my dog's food dish! rather large spider, brownish orange in color. I thought it was dead at first, so I dumped it out on the table to look at and try to figure out what it was. that must of woke him up, cause he took off running, and fell off the edge of the table before I could kill it. couldn't find it again after that.

if you want to see some gross shit do a google search for brown recluse bite.

I don't really mind the gynormous wolf spiders that I've been finding everywhere, but I'd rather not have those nasty little recluse fuckers around.

If I remember the Brown recluse has black markings on their back similar to the sound holes on violins... double checking now.

I was sort of right... it's a violin shape on their head...

The shaded area on this map shows their normal habitat... they like damp areas and are generally found in doors.

Check the eyes.

Recluse will have 3 sets of 2.

There is a similar spider to what you describe called a Woodlice spider that is completely harmless.

Recluse eyes:

Woodlouse looks like this, but has the eyes grouped very close together

Yes.. and knowing what to look for ahead of time will help the next time he sees it to be able to identify if it is one or not.

BR's are pretty small. Including the legs a big adult is about he size of the tip of your thumb. You really need to get into Southern IL before you see them. We are a little North of their range. You are probably safe. Nasty little buggers...

Of course, you will be the lucky one to find a mutant giant BR that will take your arm off.

it did look like that woodlouse spider, but with a darker abdomen. and I don't remember seeing any hair, which leads me to think maybe it wasn't the recluse. either way, I'm bug-bombing the garage this weekend. I'd rather not take the chance of having any festering necrotic flesh wounds for me or my dog.

A brown recluse is no bigger than a quarter with their legs so if you said it was a large spider, you're most likely safe.

I used to find them pretty regularly in my apartment when I went to school in Carbondale. I had to have my apartment complex bomb my place at least once a month, and they would still come back. I'd say once a week at least I'd find one.

Good Old SIU. That's where I learned all about them too.

I have a friend that had one go after him while sleeping. He got hit over 8 times. He was living in some old run down house. His closets and attic were full of them. Like I said, NASTY little buggers.

I used to work at a pet store while I was at SIU. We sold those bird eaters all the time. I'd be putting out the animals we just got in, pick up a container, and one of those would leep at the top. Scared the crap out of me everytime, even though I knew they couldn't get out.

I almost bought this while working there:

There's some pretty cool looking tarantulas out there. That blue one is a Cobalt Blue Tarantula, mean little fucker though.

Here's another cool one:

Costa Rican Tiger Rump

I actually have this one at home. I thought it died when I moved, and I never got around to cleaning out it's tank, so it's just been sitting there since July. I went to look at it today because I was going to put something else in there, and there she is sitting at the top of the mulch.

They're really easy to take care of too. A ten gallon tank, some mulch type bedding, a hiding log, water dish, heat lamp and a cricket or 2 a week and they are good.
