i really want to play with one, but I don't have a desire to own one. I'd love to demo one for a week and really get a feel for it though.

big screen, built in wireless, support for aac format. these are what I'd consider standout items for the market segment.

wireless is the big+.

looks thick like the older Ipods.

and sony ACC support format "the fit in the itune user market"

sounds interesting, but also gonna be another newer versions of itself i bet every 1yr leaving the 1st one in the dust like Ipod, IF there product takes off like Ipod did.

cost comparison?

Unless you live on an airplane, I just don't see watching visual content on a tiny screen. We have computers and tv's for that. The last thing I need personally is a way to watch more visual content. If you are out somewhere, isn't the point of being away from home to socialize, or exercise, or see the sights? This kind of device is pretty useless for my life.

the visual content is more to keep up with ipod, though the screen is an improvement. the standout items for this device I've listed.

Do you guys see folks watching visual content on iPods? I never do. On the other hand, I see people listening to iPods and other players constantly. I want to get myself an iPod Nano soon, because that is something I can get behind.

Though I am a software developer, I don't like technology for it's own sake. I like it when it solves a problem or makes life easier. For example, I am not too sure I even want a Blackberry. Having a cell is great for keeping in touch with friends, but for work, it is just another leash. A Blackberry takes it further and puts you on an email/IM leash too.

Nobody will use stupid software. A lot of it gets people excited, but they just won't use it if it doesn't serve a real need. You would not believe some of the stuff that people drop a bundle on, but never get their employees to use. As a consultant, part of my role is point out what people will use, and why. Conversely, I don't like to support ideas that are just cool, but don't get used.

Zippy, you are right on the ball. I don't need my MP3 payer to play movies, make toast or park my car for me. I just want it to play my MP3s. If I was to watch a movie than it would be on my 50" ProJo @ home not on a tiny little screen about the size of my nut sack.

Plus, the Zume has radio. Similar to others, I have never used the Ipod for movies. I don't even like watching movies on my 21 inch monitor because the image is still too small. I hope they will offer a newer version that ditches the screen idea, but keeps everything else and is smaller. Also, I would need to have proof that the product will be reliable. I have used this IPOD for 3+ years and it is still running strong. Just like bikes, I won't buy the first version of any new product, I like others to be the lab rats

I watch video on mine quite a bit. If you commute on the train instead of driving it's very nice to have.

Big plus for me is the FM radio. I like to tune into the TVs at the gym.

I returned my Inno and am contemplating the Zune. Or the Ipod with the FM add on.

I think what the Zune would need to be really competitive with the iPod is the accessories.

I personally don't like iPods and I don't own one. Maybe not so much now, but more-so in the past, they were way more costly than the competition for the same amount of storage capacity.

BUT - go in any store that sells MP3 players and they have a whole section of just iPod accessories, holders, speakers, you name it... plus if you're into car audio, a lot of newer head units will control the iPod instead of just passing the audio thru an extra input. I have to admit - some of it is pretty cool.

I think if MS doesn't come out with some similar add-ons, their player will just blend in with the other countless MP3 players with video screens.

its not even compatible with vista. they were in such a rush to get it out for the holidays, they didn't bother to make it compatible with anything other than xp.

but reviews for it seem good so far.

from my understanding the wireless only has a range of 30 ft and is only used to trade music with other zune owners.

"Here's the part that will set every iPod owner laughing. The Wi-Fi cannot be used to synchronize music, nor can it be used to connect to the Internet to download music. It can be used only in peer-to-peer connections with other Zune owners with whom you choose to exchange music. USB is the only way to synchronize music."

...

"Also, let me add that music exchanged among Zunes will cease to play after three days or after it's been played three times. This includes music, podcasts, and other files that are specifically licensed for unlimited reproduction or trading, such as music distributed under a Creative Commons license that doesn't allow post-release encryption of the sort that Microsoft wraps around it for these transfers. correct, but this is still something that sets it apart in the market segment. I wonder how long till someone hacks it so you can stream the audio to other devices.

i wouldn't think so. considering how many ppl have ipods, and how little ppl will be buying the zune, its more of a waste cause you will have no one to trade music with. so to me its more of a wasted feature.

So basically you're saying that all manufacturers shouldnt try to compete with ipod since they're the majority of the market? That's just silly.

It's a first gen unit, the iPod was pretty clunky the first time around. Following incarnations be better I imagine, good features for a 1st offering but M/S sure needs some design help. The competition will only help boost the features and quality of others, I'm sure in January Apple will announce their larger screen offering-hopefully with an FM tuner.

if you'd rather have a "Nanno" Zune, look for MS to possibly re-skin the Toshiba Gigabeat P20 sometime soon
