Someone explain gift cards to me please

Why would anyone want to trade their hard earned cash, universal at any retailer, so that it can only be used only at a certain retailer? Tack on to that, restrictions, time limits, penalties, ...etc.

What is the point of gift cards? There is no thought involved like an actual gift.

It seems more tasteful than giving people a money order or check. I like them. Come on Mao, even you can find something in Victoria Secret to wear for Flounder .

Well, I only give Armenetti gift cards to the homeless. That way, I KNOW they're getting the good stuff!

Seriously though, gift cards are another revenue stream that act much like rebates, the retailer is taking a gamble that you're not going to cash in on the full amount of your gift card or rebate.

there is a good alternative to this.

pick up some visa/mastercards at your local back and have them loaded with as much money as you want to give.

If I were to get them for others, I would check to see what kind of things they like first. Like it wouldn't make sense to give a person a 30.00 gift card to AMC theatres when they never go to the show. If it is something they don't like, the experience won't be pleasant. The only folks I would give a check to are friends that are getting married. I've heard many stories of multiple toasters and blenders. Especially with the cost of weddings today, they need every bit of cash to cut down the debt.

I was against gift cards until I started to realize that any cash gifts I recieved I used to pay bills instead of getting a gift for myself. I think some people see it as a way to guarantee you reward yourself instead of using it to pay bills.

+1

My mom for example....If I give her cash, she won't spend it on herself, and money isn't something they need, she just doesn't buy things for herself. If I buy her something, it'll probably never get worn or used (and she's impossible to shop for), she had an old winter adidas coat that she loved, but it was just old. I bought her a new one, FINALLY 4 years later she is starting to wear it. That's just how she is. Now, I just get her a gift card to ulta, so she HAS to buy something for herself, and she really likes that store.

gift cards have there place. Alot of people that i give gift cards are those that can't otherwise buy the small things they really want. Teenaged children for instance. Might really want some new video game, but not having a job, makes that hard. My brother is a prime example, My parents sent me an email the other day, we got your brother the xbox for christmas, could you get him a game for it? well if I ask him what game he wants then he will know that he got the xbox, but if I get him a gift card then i won't have tipped him off.

Or kids want an xbox 360, but the parents don't have that kind of dough, so they just ask everyone to get him a giftcard at best buy, so he can go buy it with all his giftcards. That's what we did for my cousin last year

I guess that would work. I would rather people just pooled their cash and presented a group gift.

Thankfully when I graduated college, people knew better than to give me gift cards. I received over $4K in cold hard cash.

Well....maybe, if they were 20 years old or something, but then like Misha said, they might end up paying off bills, rather then going out and actually buying what they really want. Also, we did the gift card thing for my cousin, because I don't think giving a 12 year old $500 would be such a great idea, and his mom would have probably taken it or something, because she's retarded like that, and we didn't know what games he wanted or anything, so everyone chipped in $50-$100 so he could get a controller and a game or two.

I meant everyone chip in for an Xbox 360, not give a pile of cash. I would rather my family/friends present me with an Xbox 360, than a pile of gift cards/cash. That is if they all knew an Xbox 360 is what I wanted.

Your mom sounds exactly like my mom -- except my mom doesn't even buy stuff at Ulta.

The only gift I know she'll use is a carton of smokes, so that's what I get her.

My family was lucky enough to get 3 360's last year, and that was after sitting outside of Best Buy for 18 hours!! He had to wait a couple of months, but he was still really happy.

Yeah, my mom would be happy with a carton of cigarettes, but I hate that she smokes...so I would probably get shit from her for doing that, because I sometimes get on her case about it

She just recently started liking ulta...She's very frustrating when it comes to birthday and christmas gifts. She actually would rather me get her nothing.

Mine too. If you have any "gift" ideas, let me know.

At least your mom parties. My mom has bottles of booze stockpiled in the basement from the last 20 years. Well, at least the ones I didn't steal as a teenager.

I don't mind gift cards as long as it's a place you like to shop. It is like a mini shopping spree. How many times do people exchange gifts anyways to get something else? Gift cards are good for people you don't know as well.

Visa gift cards are good because people can spend them anywhere + it's huge business for banks right now. Don't forget they start to lose value after one year.

It's not.. Banks here sell cards that lose value after one year.. I heard about the law but maybe it only pertains to retailers and restaurants.
