Thanksgiving!

So what's everyone doing for Thanksgiving this year?

Who likes turkey? Who does a less-traditional meal?

Personally, I love to cook and like nothing better than having an 'open house' for Thanksgiving (or any holiday, for that matter!).

This will be my first Thanksgiving at my home. We are having my fiance's family over and she and I are cooking. I'm making the cranberry sauce.... one can opener and a couple cans of Ocean Spray.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Playing football in the morning. Then my Mom, step Dad, and Grandparents are coming into town. We are eating at my Uncles place in Hawthorn Woods and the whole family will be there including my kids. After a long day of eating I will be heading out to Florida for the long weekend.

Dinner at the parents house. This year should be really nice, all three of the boys (myself and two younger brothers) are now out of the house so this'll be the first real homecoming with all three of us on our own.

Thats what happens when you get old.

I have been playing in this turkey bowl for over 20 years. It is kinda like tradition. My dad has been playing in it for 40 years.

I just picked up a Brinkmann 42 quart fryer off craigslist. $25, and she used it once. I look forward to frying a turkey for the first time on my own. A few neighbors also want them, so they are chipping in for oil. I love having people over, and I will probably be off all day. I wonder if my little dog would fit in the fryer.....

I deep fried one last year it turned out perfect. Best tasting turkey is a deep fried one. It was my first thanksgiving cooking but everyone came over to help out

For those of you deep-frying your bird... make sure that it is DRY when you put it in the oil. And for heaven's sake, use peanut oil.

I like a nice Cajun spice rub.

Here's what I'm thinking this year, now that I have a new kitchen to play in:

Gravy. Made from the pan drippings. Cranberry relish made with apples, oranges and spice. Oven-roasted potatoes in garlic butter with a hint of lemon and oregano. Sage/apple/walnut stuffing AND spicy chorizo cornbread stuffing. Fresh-baked bread just out of the oven. Sweet potatoes baked in a citrus/pecan glaze (or just loaded with marshmallows, brown sugar and butter). Fried zucchini in a delicate tomato sauce. Pumpkin custard, cranberry-apple pie with cinnamon ice cream, raspberry-swirl cheesecake.

Figure that would fill my refrigerator until Christmas!

So far, it's just me and the cats. I'm working on Friday, so no travel plans.

I'm driving down to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO to visit my brother. Two new twins to listen to (infants don't play too well). Matt and I will probably end up playing lots of video games, drinking beer, and watching the Texas vs. Texas A&M game.

We alternate every year-my family & my husband's. This year the in-laws decided nobody's cooking, dinner is at DuPage Country Club.
This SUCKS! Eating in a room with stangers and no leftovers!
Then I have to go to work later, so no alcohol for me.
