Black Friday & meaning

So the whole idea of Black Friday is the day the retailers claim they finally make it into the black for the year. Doesn't make sense to me, do they mean to tell us that they are running at a loss all damn year and only become profitable from thanksgiving till the new year?? How damn stupid of a business plan is that, sounds like a shitty model to me
It is 100% true that the stores do sell stuff for less than they actually buy it in hopes you will buy other stuff. But just an example, Target carried one of the products we distribute and sold it for 35% less than we get it for! That's a hell of a loss to take in hopes the shopper will but stuff they make good margins on.

I think people just throw the black in there to make it sound cool. Nothing more than that. Just more marketing hype designed to suck in brain washed consuming Americans

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

some stores will sell more during the holiday season then they will all year. Im not sure what stores, but I know stores like best buy's and other larger consumer electronics stores sell huge quantities of stuff this time of year.

Yes - this is true (at least according to what you hear on the news).

And Yes - I think they take a loss of some products - but don't feel too bad for them - they are f&%cking the customer harder than you think.

When the consumer sees a product for 30-50% off, they just HAVE TO take advantage of it. HUNDREDS of consumer (with lots of shoppoing to do for the Holidays) line up to come to take advantage of the these door busters. Of course there is only one shelf full of this special promotional product available. Its very easy for the store to calculate its 'loss' - they know they are only ging to sell xx number of items at $yy loss. Its worth it to the sore - and it simply f*$ks MOST of the customers who are now in the store with a bunch of shoping to do - and nothing else it on sale !!!

I work at Target and it's pure hell for us workers. This is the first time I have ever worked retail. It's sad to see these people lining up at 5am at the door when the doors do not open until 6am. There were some good deals, but I left at 6am (over night shift to avoid the mess), but there is no way I'm going to put up with those, good deal finding pscyhos. Target did make A LOT of money though and I saw none of it. I'm sure the CEO's get a nice Christmas bonus though.

I honestly doubt they take a loss on any items they put on major discount like that... my money says they just ordered a large enough quantity to get a killer wholesale deal... and most likely everything that goes on sale is produced by companys who dont specify minimum retail prices... allowing the larger company's who have the ability to purchase such large quantities to sell at a lower price than the average store who can only order 1/8th the amount

in the end its just a marketing gimmick to get you in the store behind one of their wonderful shopping carts with the weeble wobble wheels to spend all your money.
