If you had the opportunity, would you?

If you had the opportunity to move out to Europe for a job within your company (namely the UK) would you do it?

Iím originally from the old world and always had a dream of moving back out there but never had the opportunity. Recently my company expanded out to the World Market (including Europe, S. America & Asia) so Iíve been bouncing the idea of going out there on a semi-permanent basis (more of a dream than anything at this point). Just a thought but I figure why not throw it out to you guys and see what you think.

My wife and I lived in Paris in 83 and 84 and I can't how strongly I'd recommend living overseas if you have the chance. It both gave me a better understanding of other countries, their perspective on the US, as well as a newfound appreciation for all that the US does provide.

My daughter is going to school in HK in January for 6 months. It is great experience to draw from.

I suppose it depends on several things:

If its not permanent, will there be a position here when you return?
Other than going there, is there any other benefits?
Do you have any family or friends there? Only asking this because if you don't, you may begin relationships with people and then have to return (I suppoe that'll happen anyway).
Are you leaving anyone behind? Will you be able to take anyone with? How will it affect those people?

I could ramble on but I think you get the point.

If its not permanent, will there be a position here when you return? I’m thinking it would be permanent.
Other than going there, is there any other benefits? Closer to all of my family, the food is freaking unbelievable, I’m originally from out there (Poland) so it would feel more like home. Not saying that I don’t like it here but it has never felt like home to me even though I’ve been here almost 17 years.
Do you have any family or friends there? Most of my family is still in Poland, one of my cousins & her husband are in London. Only asking this because if you don't, you may begin relationships with people and then have to return (I suppoe that'll happen anyway).
Are you leaving anyone behind? My mom & little Ĺ brother. Will you be able to take anyone with? Haven’t gotten that detailed in my thoughts. How will it affect those people? Haven’t gotten that detailed in my thoughts.

Not England. Ugh, the food... Maybe Ireland or Scotland. Good beer and strawberry blonds.

Plus Ireland has some of the best bike roads in the world!!! All new since they joined the EU.

There is nothing firm, nothing balanced, nothing durable in all the universe. Nothing remains in its original state, each day, each hour, each moment, there is change. Change is the essence of life. Embrace change as you do life. To fight change is to live in the past.

Agreed 100%. I lived over there for the first 10 years of my life and I could say I already have that different perspective on things. One of the big things over there is pride/celebration of culture and history separated by close borders. Each country has their own traditions/customs and celebrate them in a different way, quite an eye opener.

Mad props for sending your daughter out to study abroad.

You are correct but I just wanted to see everyone's perspective on this topic since its not a simple question such as 'should I go to Italy or Spain for my 2 week vacation'

Could come back if they let me

The funny part of it is that I can take NO credit in her decision. She told us she was doing it. Although, we were quite impressed with her decision. Some of the folks on the board here that know TWink can attest that she isn't exactly shy and reserved.

I'll think she'll get a ton out of it.

BTW, based on your comments above, it looks like you already want to go. So... GO! Enjoy it!

You are correct but as mentioned before there are some serious considerations (including financial) that will have to be worked out before I can even start looking at this. Iím looking for perspectives as to why others on the board would do it

For those of you that simply said "yes" or "hell yeah": Why would you move out there?

Why would I do it? I regret not seeking opportunities for international travel or living abroad when I was younger. It's one thing to see our planet through the pages of National Geographic... but to truly appreciate the world and gain a more well-rounded understanding of history, culture and current affairs, one should experience as much of it first-hand as possible. To me, taking up residence would be the best way.

well i think it's obvious what peopel would do... i don't think i could just pick up and leave.. if it was maybe for a certain amount of time like 4-5 months ... then maybe... depending.
But to move for good, no way. I have all my family and friends, school and work here... to much to give up for me. I know I want to travel, and when I get older I will... I've been to Europe but want to travel everywhere in Europe for like 3 months.... that would be awesome!

Hope you enjoy waiting a month to see a doctor too. When Mopar's yeast infections start festering to where he's got a loaf of bread in his pants, you'll wish you were in the states!
