Food Rant

Ok guys and gals. This has been pissing me off for quite some time but I just had to let it out. WTF is it with the food in the US, mainly the pastries (doughnuts, coffee bread, crispy crap cakes, etc.). Why is there no taste aside from sugar, sugar and sugar noticeable in any of the pastries that I have ever tried out here??!!! Does anyone make anything that actually tastes good or is the sugar just used to cover up all the crappy ingredients?? Maybe itís just the fact that Iím from the old country & Iím used to cakes, cookies and other pastries that have a flavor rather than an overwhelming taste of sugar.

Well, where do you shop? If I want European pastries I go to a European bake shop. If your buying that shit in Jewel, well it's going to taste like shit. There are tons of good pastry shops all around Chicago and in the burbs. Same goes for butchers and fish mongers.

I completely agree with this statement. Down in Carbondale when I was in school, there was this little bakery in the same shopping center that I would stop by everyday i worked because it was so good. I would never get any sort of pastry anywhere else but there, except maybe a bearclaw from the gas station.

(<-WTF is this by the way?)

good point Dr. D.
This brings me to the second set of questions:
Why does a place like Jewel provide terrible tasting food instead of the good stuff, Is it just easier to bake crap or is it simply based on margin because of the cheaper ingredients? Why do I have to go out of my way to find a little shop somewhere in order to get something that tastes good?

Maybe this is why I need to move back to Europe

Sounds like you've been visiting Krispy Kremes too often Like the others have said, the quality stuff will come from the small business bakerys. I don't eat donuts from either of the big 2 (Kirspy or Dunkin Donuts), especially since I was crapping water for 4 days after eating a donut at a DD a few months back, I can't even touch the food thinking of how sick I was that day.

to each his own. if every place sold the same stuff, you'd want something else. Find a place that sells what you like and frequent it, complaining on here isnt going to solve anything. Hopefully someone can recommend some pastry shops for you.

You're too picky. Go down the aisle, grab some Matt's, call it a day...

That's understandable, but what I'm trying to get at here is why is there a market for this sugar loaded/lacking in taste food? Do people actually like it or do they simply buy it out of convenience? Going back to my days in Europe; there were private bakeries and the breads/pastries were unbelievable but the food markets had these same/similar things and they weren't all that bad.

I stay away from Krispy Kreme, I don't think a doughnut should contain 200-380 calories and 12-21g of fat but maybe that's just me.

Well that's obvious but I just want good food. My phat ass needs to consume 2500+ calories per day (you want to talk about a high metabolism) but I can't stand crappy food and its everywhere.

Stuff tastes like shit and uses cheap ass shit ingredients to support the VOLUME and UNIFORMITY needed to supply the stores (greed works in too for highest profit from cheapest cost).

Go to Bobak's bakery or find a 'great harvest' or any other local shop that makes stuff ON SITE.

Everyone Exaggerates

Lutz', or Deerfield's, or any quality bakery. Mmmmmmmmmmmm!

Bottom line, it's way cheaper to load shit up with high-fructose corn syrup than to use sugar or other sweeteners (start reading labels and it will scare you where this shit turns up - it's probably in 85% of all processed foods).

There's tons of American style places with good pastries and other food. They are simply not on every other block such as Jewel, McDonalds, and all the other places that are publicized or advertised. As we drive past a mall, we'll see the bright Dominick's or Dunkin Donuts sign and recognize it over all others too. To some degree, we'll see what we want to see. And if I'm bringing something in to work, then I go for the cheap donuts, not the nice coffee cake from the euro bakery for double the price

I miss Deerfield's, that was good stuff and highly accessible when I lived in Deerfield

So are you contributing to the obesity problem in this country by bringing in the cheap stuff or are you trying to get new clients for your personal training program?

Good Lord you are whiny, K2. "all the sweets in Jewel taste like sugar, what's wrong with you americans." waah waah waah. If you want pastries that taste like euro pastries DON'T GO TO JEWEL!! Duh. Jewel is an American grocery store. They sell American food made for Americans. That means a lot of it is mass produced using inexpensive ingredients. If you want european tasting food then find a european bakery or maybe you can go back to the old country.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Chills, don't make it sound like I'm trying to impose/oppress you Americans with a bit more healthy & good tasting food.

"Healthy" and "pastries" really don't belong in the same sentence. I guess I was a bit harsh in my post but what you are asking makes no sense to me. That's like eating at McDonald's and bitching about the fries and burgers tasting salty and like fat.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!
