Tow truck scams

I would kick someone in the balls if they STOLE my car by taking it somewhere else and charged over $1000 to get it out.

Working with the City the way I do, I got hundreds of these stories of how workers set up scams - It would make you sick

i can't believe what these people are getting away with, thanks for the heads up. Next time you want to add towing to your insurance policy and its $200 extra a year, you'll know why.
When I need a tow, I usually call this company on the southside I've had very good service with, Kustom. Free plug. I have their number saved on my phone just in case, I don't what to end up calling 'Joe's rip me off towing' cause I'm in a bind.

Seems odd ... I seem to recall a long standing law on the books against soliciting services on site. In other words, a police department, or customer would have to call out a towing company for service. I find it difficult to believe that these companies would not be open to criminal or civil penalties, unless the scamee is signing off on it prior to the truck/car leaving, then there would be little recourse.

This is pretty messed up. I guess the best defense against these crooks is to educate people. Do not accept any offer from a towing company that you did not solicit. I've gotten tows before and it's always after I called my insurance company.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

I once dated a Chicago cop who got suspended for referring accidents to his brother's towing company.

I remember years ago when I went to Triton college someone with a tow truck actually stole a handful of cars. What balls. The crooks had the perfect cover, if someone came along they just said that the owner got a ride home from a friend and they are just bringing the car to the dealer. Many bikes also disappeared from that lot. I hate thieves.

Thats because the city dosent have enough contracts with companys to tow for them. The city needs to crack down on them companys and start running them off of accident scenes. Most of the citys have list and you must meet alot of requirements to tow for them. Also if you break down never let a tower hook your car unless you know the amount and all the charges up front. There is 1 company in aurora trying to do the same thing as the companys in chicago. Remeber there are some tow companys out there looking that are honest hard workig guys.

It won't be long the pirate companys will be out of busniess. The state and cities will find a way to regulate these tow companys and then they'll have no customer base cause they ripped everyone off.

Put me on a jury for a case where a guy goes postal getting his car back from a pirate towing agency, and I'll do whatever I can to let him walk free. A thief that dies while committing a crime can be chalked up to Darwinism or Karma.

That's the sad thing. They ARE regulated:
