School closings and other sub-zero stuff.

Pretty much every school district here was closed. They started announcing closings last night. They didnt close Janesvilles until THE LAST MINUTE. Why does it seem they close schools now for the littlest reasons compared to the 70's where we still had to go even if we got 18" of snow and its 20 below?

1000 east side J-ville residents were without power at 5am this morning after a power line snapped.

Schools opened a couple of hours late here... they started announcing it yesterday afternoon. The weather generates much less 'drama' in these parts it appears.

Because we live in a litigious society where people see a school district as a potential lottery.

Plus some parents a completely inept and would let a kid walk to school in weather like this and if something happened would sue the school stating that they made the kid come so they are liable even-though the parent sent the kid without a hat a gloves.

You probably had to walk 10 miles for school each way and it was uphill.

It's good they closed school due to the cold. Some kids have to walk to school and it's dangerous being exposed to these temperatures and winds.

They might not have closed school when the weather was like this when you were a kid, but they damn well should have. Where I was growing up we'd get a few feet of snow and the buses would get stuck. School wouldn't be cancelled and I'd be a pissed kid. Now they cancel school for weather like this. Good.

Sh*t, people are without electricity and heat. I think going to school is second on the list to being warm.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

I bleed GREEN

This coming from someone who likes to spend his time in Alaska on a frigid mountain?

While I do agree that this cold is nasty, I also remember having to rough it in a LOT colder temps. If people would learn to dress for the weather occasionally instead of insisting on wearing the latest miniskirt to Highschool, it might not be so bad for them.

Why don't they close work on days like this? Why do children get all the special treatment?

Ride smart... stupid hurts.

Everyone crashes. Some get back on. Some don't. Some can't...

Godspeed 788!!! We miss you!

In the little rural towns we never closed due to the temperature, because we all rode the bus. I could see the areas where more students walk, but oh well. What can ya do?

Because kids and parents alike are a bunch of pussies.......The last time I remember school closing was for a blizzard in 1980......even the plows didn't go out and we had 24" of snow that day.

Pretty much. Kinda like banning touch football, dodgeball, tag or runnig on the playground.

BTW Chills, elementary school was 1 block from my house for 2 yrs and 1/2 mile the others.

I DID walk/ride bike 1.5 miles uphill both ways in Junior High for 3 yrs. But I got to go down hill first both ways.

Then again we had GOOD winter coats and DRESSED for the weather unlike the kids today NEEDING their fasionable coats and gloves which may only be good to 40 deg.
