First tattoo- where to go?

Looking to get my first (and most likely only) tattoo and would like some ideas of a good, clean shop to go to. Not going to get anything too radical, just my 3 kids first initials and a number that has special meaning to me.

Please, for those that do not like the idea of a tattoo save the sermon, this is not a spur of the moment decision. I have been thinking of this since '02 when my son died but thought I'd give the idea some time.

The tattoo will be a simple B C L
w/the number 32 centered under the C

or something to that effect.

Thanks for any help

If it is as simple as you said with just the letters and number, I'm pretty sure just about any shop can handle that. Just find the cheap one. If it is going to have a lot of detail and stuff then I'd worry about where to go???

Good Luck though, they are addicting........

my sister, her friend, her fiancee, all got there's from Auggie's Place in South Elgin. And if I can get out of here and make it home this weekend (we had a blizzard in Urbana) I'll be getting mine done there on Saturday. From what I've seen it's a clean place, they have individual rooms and from what I've seen he does good work.

Yeah! Jade Dragon had a great rep years ago. Now? They're trying to run with that even though the great majority of the original, award winning artists are looooong gone.

Take your time and look around. Ask tons of questions and be willing to spend the few extra dollars. "He did a good job." is a million miles away from "Award winning, best in class work." If you're gonna ink yourself for life, be patient. My buddy drove to Michigan to get "THE BEST" money could buy. Ten years later he still gets compliments. . .

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. ~ Buddha

Go see Larry Brogan at Tattoo City in Lockport. He an all around excellent artist. Check out the tattoos tab on the right of his page to see some of his work.

http://tattoocityskinart.com/Home.htm

Also, you can check out all the awards he's won. He's great in black and gray, but a friend had some color work done and it turned out great.

I went to Jade back in the day. But from what I've heard there not as good anymore.

I've been itching for a new tattoo for the last few months

Don't forget to check out the tattoo magazines, they almost always list the artist and shop. When you see something you like, THAT's the guy you want to go to. Everyone writes differently, and everyone tattoos differently, but defining 'great tattoo artists' is kinda like defining porn; "you'll know it when you see it."

Good luck.

Yeah...my buddy Sean came over and did a few at my house...and when it was finally my turn he was tired...I said go home and do mine later. He came back the next day and did mine!

So yeah.....probably won't be able to do that many tattoos in one night and keep the quality as high....I surely wouldn't want to be last!!!

I have a butt load of work done and all my work is done by O'Tool Design in Rock Island, IL. I have been getting work from the same guy, Jason (a/ka/ Wind), since December of '00. Alot of you have seen some of my work and I have gotten even more lately. Keith and Janel (lowbuse & blueberry) also have gone out with me for ink. Keith is working on a leg piece & a huge back piece and Janel also did some back work. Artists are great and super cool guys. And hands down great art work otherwise I would not be driving 2 hrs to get work done. Check out the sites. If any of you are interested shoot me a PM.

If you are talking about a intricate piece I would go to a shop for this. Don't do this at a tattoo home party.

Sorry, but bad advice. Regardless if big, small, color or black & grey it is imperative you shop the artist. Don't shop for price or you will get exactly what you pay for. You will end up with poor lines, faded colors & shades and poor ink quality.

A good shop with a good rep is great but once you get in there find out people's specialty. Some guys are great with lettering and some aren't. Just ask to see there portfolios and check out the artist style.
