Directv

Ok so I keep seeing their back to the future commercial which states that soon they will have 3 times the HD capacity of cable. Is there any buzz out there about when they are going to launch the new service or what they are going to have?

Thinking about switching my parents over to Directv. Comcast has been horrible in getting their problems fixed. Had to coach my mom on how to call them as an angry customer this morning she's always too nice.

I go where the technology is, right now Comcast has the best system. But if Directv makes a big leapfrog here, I may be switching back to them.

I've been staying off avs purposely. Too much temptation. I absolutely love my setup right now and don't feel any desire to change it, so i'm avoiding more research till I get a new house.

Standard Def DirecTivo for the win!! Not enough HD channels to sway me, and I surely don't want to run the DirecTV DVR. If I can find a cheap HD DirecTivo on ebay I might consider it. I look from time to time.

So, I've been looking at cable services too, and DirectTV has an internet special where you get a free dvr, and you get 10 bucks off your bill each month for 1 yr. So, I was going through the process and they ask if you will allow them to do a credit check, and if you don't they charge you a $300 fee and credit you $5.00 per month as long as you're not late on your bill. WTF?! I don't want any inquiries on my credit, I've never heard of cable companies doing credit checks before? I should call them and see if it's a soft or hard inquiry, I wonder if the reps would even know what I am talking about??

oh, they're just ragging on capacity, not real channels. i.e. blowing smoke up your skirt. they don't have enough transponders up in the sky to deliver 150 channels of HD right now

here's a list that I've found for both sat companies that's kind of up-to-date

looks like about thirty+ for Dish Network and about a dozen channels for DirecTV (not include the broadcast network channels)

I've had Directv for the last year, and decided to keep them based on the fact that they will install the system free when I moved.

Thursday from 1-5pm. Sit there and wait. No call, no show up.

Piss and moan, get $100 credit on my bill and reschedule for saturday, 8am-12pm.

They call at 10 and say "We won't get there until 2"

I say "Nope. This is the second and last chance, get here by 12 or don't bother."

So, I guess I'll be subscribing to Comcast again soon.

Well after being dissappointed in not seeing the Superbowl in HD ...I asked around a bit. I just got Directv within the last couple years, and got their latest HD Tivo a year ago. I just called Directv and found out that I do not have a dish, or reciever that is able te recieve my locals in hd, or the upcoming new hd channels ....wtf?

I saw the new HD dvr was $500 cheaper than the one I have, so switching out seems fairly inexpensive. They better throw in the dish for free or something.

Well since I purchased a new tv this weekend that is high def, I decided I needed some HD channels. So I went with directv, I even talked the guy into throwing in a free portable dvd player! I got the dvr with the $100 mail in rebate, and then the $10.00 off each months bill for a yr...not bad!

I have had the new DirecTV HD DVR and new oval dish for about 2 months now and I'm very happy with it. It is different than the HD TiVo box I had, but that's not a bad thing. It's just different and takes a little getting used to. It seems a little slower navigating through different screens/channels, but not that big of an issue for me. Not as bad as Comcast's DVR though. I do like how you can set up a season pass by just selecting the show and hitting the "R" button two times. I don't have to go through multiple screens to set up a season pass like the TiVo. It has some better features than TiVo, but TiVo has better ones than like getting into the program guide. TiVo is a button push, where this one is a 2 button push. However, it's a two button push because the first button push gets to a screen where you can selectwhat kind of guide you want. Like all channels, just movie channels, or just sports channels. I'd say it's a wash.

I now have local channels in HD which is what I wanted. However, channel 5's, NBC, HD signal is not that great for fast motion sports. You can see some lines in the picture when it's following a moving object. All the other HD channels are Great. I would recommend it.

it does, doesnt it? Do you set the preferred resolution output on that box? If so what do you have it set to? You should set it to 720p if possible for your setup.

I don't think so. I only have this issue with NBC channel 5. The box is set to display the native resolution for that broadcast automatically. I tried changing it to 720P from 1080i and it didn't help. Maybe "lines" wasn't the best desciption. It just looks "loose" and not as sharp as my other HD channels do. ESPN still has the best HD signal IMO.

Like I said, it's only this one channel and during sports. Movies look fine.

For the record, in the 8 or so years I have had DirecTV, my issues have been very few and far between.

One thing I like about having cable is living in plainfield during major storms I still have signal and can watch the radar to see if a tornado is about to drop on my house. when I had directv I always had to use my laptop. Plus with cable you actually get the weather channel local version instead of that national version, and the emergenciy alert system breaks into the channels on cable. Since the hd channels were national channels on D* you never got those before.
