If the TV you buy has a built in HD tuner, yes you will get off the air HD broadcasts from channels like NBC, ABC, WGN etc. By coaxial cable i assume you meant comcast, if so you will not need the antenna to get your off the air locals as they will be included in your HD package. If your going directv you will want to keep that antenna and run it through their HD box to get your off the air locals.
Give my buddy Ken Kozluv a call. He is sales manager for Tweeter in Oakbrook. He'll set you straight and give you a no BS price. Tell him Mao sent you.

I didn't buy Plasma, bought a LCD projection, it's the best for high def digital gaming (much better than DLP) although I'm sure others would disagree, if you aren't hanging it on a wall flat screens are a waste. You can also negotiate at circuit city if you talk to a manager. If you go Plasma, Pioneer is top of the line, LCD Flatscreen = Sharp, I bought a panasonic because it had the best ratings through consumer reports for LCD projection. At any rate LCD is the future of television, not plasma or DLP, mark my words.
Best brands for Plasma's... Panasonic & Pioneer. Still the best all around picture IMO for 50"+.
Tweeter is not really overpriced, they just carry alot of high end stuff. You can also negotiate.. Some Plasma's are not good for gaming due to Image Retention.
A projection LCD will be thicker than a Plasma or regular LCD so no wall hanging. Most Plasma's have their own scaler so upconverting DVD players don't make much of a difference. I have a 1080i unconverting DVD player hooked up to my Pioneer and can not tell the difference when the display upconverts to 768P.
Compare for yourself. Check out AVS forum and review the couple you narrow it down to. I ended up buying mine from Tweeter in Aurora and they all raved about Pioneer.

I agree with you, go in informed. I knew exactly what I wanted and I ended up buying from Barrett's in Naperville, but walked in knowing what I was going to spend.... I told them, they told me I was crazy, I said I had cash... I ended up with the TV two days later delivered by them with a smile!
CRT is still the best picture. best contrast / best blacks... however, the TV's are huge, and they need to be adjusted every so many years.
LCD is great if you have a lot of ambient light, as you get very little glare.
DLP is nice because of the sizes you get, but the picture will not compare to LCD / plasma.
Plasma will have the best picture when compared to DLP / LCD, but it is shit if you have a lot of light as the reflections suck. It also has the worst problem with image retention / ghosting / screen burn. Most modern TVs don't have much of a problem, but if you play a lot of games with static images for a long time you might get short term ghosting.
As an FYI, I have an LCD projector and a plasma, the plasma is FAR better, but the LCD projector is admittedly cheap.
I have no idea what to get. I like the picture of the Elite 1080p. But, for $6000, that is a lot to spend.
I cannot decide between DLP and LCD. I have no idea which way to go. The LCD picture is so bright. The DLP has major ghosting or blurring issue with fast motion.
Try a few different places for viewing. I bought the samsung 61" 1080p DLP.
Everywhere I went it looked horrible, till I went to tweeter and saw it with comcast as the source. the picture was amazing and it is super bright. I dont have any bluring issues either with fast moving sports. Go to the tweeter in by fox valley mall and check it out. thats where I ended up getting mine.
Also everyones eyes are different. Buy whichever one makes your eyes happier, as your the one who will be enjoying it. Who cares what those sluts from the strip joint think about your picture quality.
I was going to go with the 56" DLP Samsung and Samsung BluRay DVD player. But, now I am not sure about the ghosting/blurring with fast motion on the DLP.
I enjoy watching racing on TV. I watch SpeedTV for 25% of my viewing time. I wanted to hook up my computer to the TV and do some gaming. And I will watch a shit load of DVDs on the set.
I went with a 720 lcd rear projection a couple years back, and i have been happy with it. The HD and gaming look great. I got it for hundreds less than the same size flat panel, and I did not need the space savings that a flat panel offers either.
remember, if you get something that is wall mountable you can easily move it to another room if you ever upgrade in the future. That was a big selling point for me. I've had my panny plasma over 2 years now and I swear I love it more each day.
Toshiba and Sony got the best review and bang for your buck. Sony uses Lcos while Toshiba uses DLP.
I have no need for a flat panel tv. Rear projection is cheaper, so thats a plus. This is the exact TV I am getting. Keep in mind that 1080P is only capable through HDMI. Most tv's only have a max of 2 now.
This well confuse you even more but.... ask to see a standard def picture on the display. Why? Most HD displays do a decent job with HD content but suck with SD. At this point you're still going to be watching a large percentage of SD.
The scalers on Plasma's excel at upconverting SD programming. I have the Elite but at 6k it is pricey. Most stores display only HD content to wow you, ask to see standard def as well. My old Sony HD LCD projetion really really sucked at SD converting...
I just recently bought a samsung 50" dlp 1080p rear projection TV. I love it and the picture in HD is great, the only problem I've had is comcast's component cables did not work with my TV. They caused a moving horizontal lines and a loud humming noise. I went out and bought an hdmi cable and it works fine now.
john...gumba's g/f works at a store in downers grove right off butterfield...dont remember the name of the place off hand but they undercut all joints like circuit city, best buy and all the others and they gaurentee it...call dave or call me and i can toss ya daves #...she will hook you up bro...and they carry EVERYTHING in this place...nice ass tv's and cheap ass prices...you missed going out with gumba, milenko, dibs and myself on a bike ride couple of weeks ago and we meet up with her at her work to take her for a quick ride...its right on the corner of finley and butterfield...
