Knight Rider (KITT) on sale for $150K

Link to story:

Or, you can read the story here:
DUBLIN, Calif. - KITT, the flame-throwing, river-jumping, talking muscle car from the `80s TV show "Knight Rider," is up for sale. Restored to its debut-season glory, the modified black 1982 Pontiac Trans Am is offered at $149,995 at a Dublin auto dealership. Johnny "Vette" Verhoek of Kassabian Motors has had the car, officially called Knight Industries Two Thousand, on display for about a month.

It is one of four documented "camera cars" used for close-up shots and scenes where David Hasselhoff, who played Michael Knight in the series, was behind the wheel.

Although it cannot achieve the 300 mph speeds that KITT reached, soar 50 feet in the air or throw smoke bombs, key features of the star car are intact. Perhaps most important, the red scanner light on the nose glows and makes a humming noise.

The car has two working video screens on the dashboard, and the cockpit features buttons that light up in green, yellow and red: ski mode, rocket boost, micro jam, silent mode, oil slick and eject.

Most of the buttons don't do anything, Verhoek said. Nor can the car hold a conversation or drive itself.

KITT isn't even street legal because of missing smog equipment and other modifications. Whoever buys the car will probably keep it in a private collection, or it may be purchased by a museum, Verhoek said.

The car belongs to Tim Russo of Livermore, a Kassabian customer who figured now was a good time to test the market, with the 25th anniversary of the show's debut coming up.

Russo purchased the car 10 years ago at an auction in San Diego, and has spent the last decade finding parts to restore it.

--------------------

I wonder if the Hoff is gonna be in on this bidding?

I need a car like this to drive me home on the weekends. How cool would THAT be?

The lack of smog equipment means it isn't legal in CA, but it should be legal in other states, right? I mean, I know we do emissions testing here but nowhere near the testing they do in CA.

They sell kits to convert TransAms for WAY cheaper. The steering wheel is not street legal also because most places require a wheel.

I wonder if it's the newest version, with the orange flaps that come out for assisted braking, that would be sweet.

Now that you mention it, KITT does sound like Mr Feeney. If KITT had a rack like Topanga, I'd throw a bid on it. Or pee in its exhaust pipe.

That's because they are the same. and yes, Topanga is quite hot.

I'd rather rock the A-team van. Kitt was a snob.

3rd declaration: In such extreme circumstances, the law is by definition inadequate. To shame its inadequacy, it is necessary to act outside the law, to pursue natural justice. This is not vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive-it is an emotional response. Vengeance serves no larger purpose. Society does not benefit from vengeance. Violent men are not deterred by acts of vengeance. The only appropriate response to their actions is the one I have chosen to pursue: a course of purposed, intentional violence. Violence intended to instruct, as much as destruct. A course, in a word, of punishment

DOubt it would be legal anywheres else either. Isnt just the lack of smog equipment, its usually because cars used on movie/tv series sets are serialled (factory vins removed) through the studio and have no valid titles, just bill of sale certificates. At least thats how I understand it.

And yes that steering wheel isnt legal for road use either. Has to be a complete ring and meet DOT crash standards. That I know for sure.

BTW you could make the car talk nowadays with how small modern PCs are.

So with today's technology how difficult would it to build Kitt.

- 300 mph out of a TA is still a stretch
- Turbo Boost? I still don't get how the car launches in the air. Plus it would never survive several impacts.
- Yes, the car could talk now but Kitt had a personality
- Car drives it self...., Lexus parks itself?!?!?
- Fins to slow car down, no problem..
- Oil slick, smoke screen.... no problem
- Bullet proof car, there is a company that will convert any car to bullet proof..
- Ejection seat... I saw one on Myth Busters..

Sure was, find an episode of night rider and listen to kitt, you'll be picturing that old man's face on the steering wheel in no time.

now that I'm thinking about it, I'm going to get scrolling LEDs and hook it up to the fiddy.

Another one of these Knight Rider Trans Ams has been sitting up at the Antique Auto Museum in Volo for years.

It's really not very impressive at all up close. I can think of way cooler toys to buy for half that money than some pos tv car.

Because people are too stupid to come up with anything new and there's enough of a large segment of the population obsessed with holding onto their childhood that will throw money towards anything reminding them of it.

Well there was never a movie before so I wouldn't say it's a remake, rather t.v. show turned movie. Problem with most of these is the studio or writers put no effort in to the story or plot. They rely on people to see the movie just because the remember the show, case in point, Dukes Of Hazzard.

It will probably suck or be tailored towards kids. Is Hoff taking the lead again?
