Traveling beyond Naperville

April 1, 2007

Here's what to expect on the area's interstates and expressways this construction season:

I-88

Interchange work at Interstate 88 and Naperville Road is on schedule to be completed late this summer. Currently, the eastbound exits from and westbound entrances to the tollway remain closed. The work is part of larger effort to widen I-88 to four lanes in either direction from Route 59 to Finley Road under Gov. Rod Blagojevich's $5.3 billion congestion-relief program for the Illinois Tollway system.

I-355

Maybe the largest undertaking in the governor's program is the extension of I-355 from Bolingbrook to Interstate 80 in Will County. The new 12.5 mile roadway is scheduled to open November 2007.

I-55

Preliminary construction work on the Interstate 55 Corridor Improvement Project began last month with intermittent lane closures and temporary traffic-pattern shifts. The two-lane expressway will be widened to three lanes in either direction next year from Weber Road in Bolingbrook south to I-80.

I-294

An almost 45-mile stretch of Interstate 294 will be under construction from O'Hare Airport north to the Wisconsin state line during the next three years. The tollway eventually will be rebuilt and widened to four lanes in either direction.

I-94/Dan Ryan

Work is ongoing on Interstate 90/94, or the Dan Ryan Expressway, making for messy travel, as the local lanes from 31st Street south to Interstate 57 are closed for the second phase of the reconstruction project. Drivers will be diverted to four express lanes in either direction between 31st and 71st streets through the project's completion, which is expected this fall.

That would have been really, really nice if they had this done 5 years ago when I was going to SIU. I could have made it there in close to 4 hours instead of 4.5 hours.

Something needed to be done with SB I55 at Weber. I sit in that flustercuck every day. The whole I55 corridor from US30 to 355 is a joke either direction.

Hopefully I won't have this job anymore to use the 355 extension or the widened I55.

Funny how I still sit and roll and stop and roll a little more at the Army Trail toll and just after the Boughton toll on 355. Open Road Tolling is so great!

I-88 is also slated this summer to begin widening to 3 lanes all the way from the Aurora toll plaza to the Orchard Road exit. The toll over the Fox River is a cluster every single workday. With 3 lanes I could get to work in 10 mins instead of 20.

So, with the 355 extension I could get on 355 at I80 which will rock (eliminating I55 from my drive) but NB 355 still sux from Boughton to 63rd then anywhere from Rt56 all the way to 290 sometimes.

Wonder how this will affect traffic on I80 now. I80 is hardly ever gets backed up west of 57 any time of the day.

meh. I spend 15-20 hours a week in traffic to get to and from my crappy job. wah wah. Nobody made me move down here, but there must be more to life.

When will the Elgin-O'Hare ever span from Elgin or O'Hare? That expy could use 3 lanes each way during rush hour too.

Weber is a perfect example of piss-poor planning for an explosion of population. There's no reason it has to be that bad. None. All the trucking companies and/or companies that use many trucks for transport off of Weber doesn't help either.

Some days for me to get from Boughton to I55 on Weber can take almost an hour. What's the alternate? Plainfield-Naperville to Rt59 then sit in that mess? I've tried every and any alternate to I55.

I was just talking about that exactly with someone the other day...88 and Rte 59 is the same deal. I can't understand how people thought that left turn access off of major roads was a good idea.

I'm in the business of road construction, and many of the bigger companies are not accepting any bids for the rest of the year due to the large scale DOT jobs upcoming and currently underway.

That would make getting to school so much easier, going from 53 to 290 to 294 to 80 to 57 is a pain, especially at the toll right before 80 on 294. It used to be a hell of a lot worse when they were still working on it. But with that new route I could probably get to Champaign in an hour and a half, already made it in under 2 hours

Honestly it never really gets bad unless there's an accident, and I really hope they don't widen or extend it, I live 5 minutes from there and it's so convenient I don't really want it to become a commuter stop, plus right now no cops are ever on it and making it a rush hour side street would litter it with patrol cars

Sometimes I just take 355 to 63rd/Hobson to Washington to 75th to 59 to 111th then the backroads to get to Ridge Rd.

My bad. I just looked at your location/final destination.

Boughton->NaperPlainfield -> 127th, east to stewart, to 126 over to S. Ridge? (similar again, but not sure how bad traffic is for that... probably the same either path)

Next week is Work Zone Safety Week and the traditional beginning to highway construction season. We want to send a message to motorists now to slow down in work zones, IDOT Secretary Timothy W. Martin said. If you are caught speeding in a work zone, at minimum you will be looking at a fine of $375, at worst, you can kill yourself, a loved one or a worker.

Under enhanced penalties passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Rod Blagojevich last year, first-time work zone speeders, including those caught on camera, will be hit with a fine of $375, with $125 of that sum going to pay off-duty State Troopers to provide added enforcement in construction or maintenance zones. Two-time offenders are subject to a $1,000 fine, including a $250 surcharge to hire Troopers, and the loss of their license for 90 days.

Starting in July, State Troopers will deploy specially equipped vans that can take photographs of drivers speeding in IDOT and Tollway construction and maintenance zones. Tickets will be issued by mail to vehicle owners.
$375 for the first and $1000 and a 90 day suspension for the second speeding offense. Anybody have more info on this?

That's been going on already. I drive in the 88/355 mess everyday, I've only seen the van once, though.

I can't wait until the 355 extension opens up, I get stuck by 55 and weber a few times a week.
