Sammy Sosa

A walk through time...

Slammin' Sammy has returned to Major League Baseball after a one year absence, basically forced by what was a horrendous season with the Orioles in '05. His downfall seemed to coincide directly with the steroid scandal.

I know this is not news, but being as he's back, and just hit his first homer of the year yesterday it is again relevant.

Sosa as a normally structured human in his first few seasons in the bigs.

Balloonhead Sosa in the steroid years

In '02 at the Home Run Derby

Sosa, looking noticeably smaller in '07...yet, a little bigger than in '05, hmmz

He's huge in that All Star pic, I was at the game in Milwaukee. He hit one of the center field score board that busted it out and one out of the park. I pretty much lost any faith in the guy after the corked bat incident..

I don't agree with him being one of the poster boys for roids, he was one of hundreds in MLB. McGuire, Bonds, Sosa and Giambi get all the blame because they were so obvious with bulking up and power numbers. How many players took them for speed or pitching?

He may do well back in Texas, he was a decent ball player before. He actually stoled bases and could even throw the ball.

This is true, until he became the bionic man and completely changed his game from a balanced player that struck out a lot to an oversized, one dimensional player in pursuit of the single season home run mark. Bonds saw the attention given McGuire and Sosa in '98 and followed suit. Sosa is a poster boy for the topic because he and McGuire more than anyone else (Giambi closely behind) began the controversy. Everyone felt rosy at the time because post-strike baseball was in the crapper. In hindsight, it was glaringly obvious. To those of us paying attention, it was always obvious.

They should start a steroid league. That would be great: home runs, heart attacks, and tumors. I'd love to see that.

When I use to work out, I had a belt that said "Roid Junkie" on the back. I gave that up because the guys on roids were way bigger than me.

Shit, I remember his first season with the Sox (jehri curl mullet days) when he was no bigger than a catsup bottle.

I know you're kidding, but with a major leaguer's schedule...I doubt it. Life has to be eat, lift, eat, sleep, repeat to get that big.

Can't stand Sosa. Never seen a player with a worse attitude, who couldn't even back up his bad attitude by playing well.

Runners in scoring position, 2 outs, Sosa at the plate....you might as well go make a sammich because all your gonna miss is a K and Sosa walking back to the dugout with that stupid WTF look on his face.

When he won the Espy for player of the year in '98, he gave this big speech in front of the New York audience, went on and on about his year...and then thanked the PEOPLE OF NEW YORK!! No mention of the Chicago fans at all...WTF?? What an idiot. I couldn't stand him before that, but started rooting against him after that comment.

+1000 on this, Sosa didn't understand the homerun wasn't the only play..

Steroids were not illegal until the last couple of years so technically Sosa did not violate Baseball rules, yeah maybe some U.S. laws... but whatever.

Is Sosa a hall of famer? It looks like they will keep McGuire out after he made an ass of himself at the roid hearing.

He pulled the same thing. He claimed he didn't know how to speak English during this time Like Maynard said, he wasn't a clutch hitter. He would hit huge bombs like Arod when the games didn't matter.

I liked Sosa's 4 hops out of the box, then run when it hits the ground. Dip shit always thought he hit a homer, but when it fell short, he'd only get a single instead of a double or triple. He was a bitch.

Soriano is a different story, he has been stretching everything into extra bases so far!!!

Never cared for that argument...it was always AGAINST THE LAW...do we need to reinstate public law within each workplace to make it punishable or against that particular office's, organization's or league's rules??

He's no Hall of Famer, none of them are. The way I see it, the whole era is f'd when it comes to the Hall. McGuire's voting was shockingly low, a real statement by the voters at large.

I agree, and just wait till they find a way to test for HGH. You will see all of these guys quit, get cut, or go into a huge slump again. I truly believe Sammy could be on something now, I don't want to start a witch hunt type situation, but I remember the moments right after the steroid scandal aired, he couldn't get the ball out of the infield, and his bat speed decreased at least 25%. It kind of sucks, but this is one of those situations like nukes where science has got us in trouble. All sport stats are questionable now because of what these chemists have and can do in a lab to engineer athletes.

This is so profoundly sad.

I long for the days where all the big sluggers were on is hot dogs, beer and cigars.

I cringe anymore anytime any of those old greats get their records broken by these frauds.
