hey man, i don't know the areas, thats why i'm asking. Would peoria have good schools though.... my guess would be not. I know rockford schools make chicago public schools look like northbrook schools....

Are you familiar with any of the suburbs of those areas that would have good schools?

I would have had to sell my place and get a WI license in 2 months. It was a little to far for me in retrospect though. I guess i would like to stay within 1.5 hrs from the north side...

I could have said "this is sparta!"

Seems to be a bit out of his 500k price range

Clevis, I am not referring to Rockford or Peoria proper, but the surrounding towns. I doubt you will find a lot of 1st hand knowledge here, but from what I've seen, are some great school facilities seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Great facilities + small class sizes = good schools? I would imagine that you would want to stay somewhat near a bigger city, so I think those are a couple places to start. If you contact a realtor in those areas, they will be able to point you in the right direction in regards to schools and amenities.

You won't touch anything in Wayne for 500K.

1.5 hrs from the north side, Crystal Lake, McHenry to Rockford.

If your serious find a broker, as was previously mentioned.

That's rough... my parent's place is on 38, but is a few times that price and the schools are average.

OH!!! .... and PS... if you are looking for an area with some land check out by Elburn. The train line for Metra just got expanded out there and it's building so you would not only get land, but also increasing property value!

thanks for all the suggestions! there are some very interesting places that I never even knew about.

I did stumble upon a 25 acre place with a 6 yr old ranch for under $400k... oh, less than 1.5 hrs away. seems to be the best deal so far.

It is kind of on the border of school districts though; the district that it is in is not as good (though not bad by any means) as if i lived a half mile over....
