Chicago Doctor Offering Free Lasik for Service Members

Very cool gift to our service members.
This is the same office and doc that did my Lasik. This guy charges about 5k on average for his services too. He is not one of these discount places, good for him giving back. If anyone here meets the guidelines for the free surgery I Highly recommend him.

He is the best in my opinion. His son also has a practice downtown. These free surgery's are actually going to cost him more than just his time. From what I understand the "Visix brand" machine they use for the lasik has a royalty program where with every procedure done the doc must send a check for x-amount of dollars to the company that makes the machine. Strange since the doc has to buy the machine for 1mil+ to begin with.

right on! I wish more professionals would follow this doctor's lead and give a little back to those who risk it all for this country.

He is one of the pioneers and very well respected. Cheryl had her eyes done by his son who is also one of the best in the industry.

Wonder if I could get this done! lol The news broadcast said anyone that has been to Iraq or Afghanistan!

I actually had PRK done while in the service for free when I was 21. My eyesight has changed and now I have to wear glasses again. He's doing a great service to many veterans and soldiers.

One nagging question is. This is considered a surgery, and follow ups must be made to check healing of the eye. Usually when people get this done they are't allowed to deploy for X amount of months, wonder if the doctor knows that. Also the risks associated with getting the eye surgery done and jumping out of airplanes and whatnot.

Yep, follow ups are needed. For about 6 months or so. First they are frequent but then mellow out. Last one I had a while back was 6 month. One last one to go at the 1 year mark.

Hey Inu, I'm sure you can get it done, but you're right about the risk when in an unpressurized airplane. At very high altitudes people with lasik have their eyes crap out on them. They usually go blind while up there but their eyesight returns to normal once they get to a lower altitude.

The first example I can think of is Dr. Beck Wethers on Everest in '96.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!
