Liquids disposal

I have some used coolant as well as a 5 gallon gas can with fuel left over from TWO winters ago (when I drained the tank on the CBR) which is probably varnish by now.

Where can I properly dispose of these? The coolant is in old gallon milk jugs, but the gas is in my own containers that I'm not keeping, so I hvae to be able to dump it somewhere.

Just called Autozone, they only take oil-based products.

You could try a local car dealer as well, since they have someone come and pick up their used coolant and oil, or a Jiffy Lube or something

Pep Boys takes coolant and oil. I've dumped both there.

You can also call your local Fire Station. They sometimes take hazmat.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Don't waste your time or theirs trying, unfortunately. They can't take fluids for recycling from anyone off the street who walks in their door, because of contamination. Coolant in oil or vice versa, and they get penalized/fined big time by the company that receives the fluids for recycling. Can't risk getting burned financially. It's happens, and my BP gas station used to take used fluids, but won't anymore for the same reason.

Most quick lube places like Valvoline, or Jiffy Lube will take waste oil and
anti-freeze, at no charge. The gas is a tough one. But you can put small
amounts in your car. Your car has such a large gas tank that it will dilute the fuel and you won't even notice a change in your performance.

Coolant is no problem, Firestone and places like that wil take it. But the gasoline is proving to be a problem, even the local Fire Department was like WTF?

My buddy said he'll run it in his old truck, even if it's a couple years old he said 5gal diluted in a 40gal tank and it'll burn fine.

The IEPA has a haz materials collection site here in Rockford. If you can't find a place close to home it might be worth to make the drive. Maybe save your fluids and drop them when it worth the trip.

I don't think that 'they' neccasrily make it hard to do so, but it's just a result of the complicated and expensive nature of dealing with hazardous materials. Nobody wants this stuff (N.I.M.B.Y.).

PM Odysseys>>> I am sure he'll give directions to Brians backyard. If he has been dumping oil, I'm sure a little gas won't hurt.

Nice find JoJo. I've got a shitload of DOT4 brake fluid I need to get rid of. It's been sitting in my garage since last summer 'cause I didn't know where to take it. It's too bad they only have "collection events" and not a facility somewhere that takes chemicals Mon-Fri, year 'round.

OK, I guess I'm just to rednecked.

I use old gas to clean paint brushes after using them for oil based or staining projects. Same as mineral spirits. I also use it as a weed killer, works as like round-up. I do use an old windex bottle for spray application, cause it does ruen the container.

Do you have a lawn mower (or neighbors with lawn equipment)? That's what old gas is used for!
