Got hit by an SUV today

Thought I'd share the story... I was riding my bicycle down Halsted St in the Greek town area. I was over in the right in the bike lane going about 15 or 20mph and there was pretty decent traffic. Oddly enough, I was just starting to think to myself "How come I always wear a helmet when on a motorcycle but never on a bicycle? I mean I probably go over 20mph on a pedal bike too..."

So before I finish that thought, a black SUV on the left that I was riding next to takes a right turn right in front of me. I slammed the brakes but still got sideswiped, and had to push myself away from the car with my elbow and knees or else I would have rammed his rear passenger door. It was pretty slow so I managed to keep it upright, and since his car wasn't damaged either, we just went our separate ways.

Anyways... I guess I better start wearing a helmet 100% of the time regardless of whether my 2 wheels have a motor connected to them or not! Even at slow speed, that could have turned out a lot worse, I could have got knocked off and ended up under his wheel or cracked my head on the curb or something.

I'm always worried about cutting off a bicycle with my cage just like that...glad you made it out ok.

Did you and the driver determine that no one was at fault??? Were you in a bike lane (not sure if they have them on that section of Halsted)?

I know the city has bike lanes but you have to be insane to think that most drivers think of you as nothing more than a speed bump.

Glad you okay

Yep, I pretty much always were my helmet when on my bike. A few years ago I wiped out and wasn't wearing a helmet, I remember very well the sound and pain I felt when my head bounced off the pavement. Fortunately my head was ok, just a bump, had 2 cracked ribs though and that was no fun. After that I've always worn my helmet on my bike (which isn't very often these days since I hardly ever ride it).

Last summer the same thing happened to me. A lady decided to turn and I was next to her. Unfortunatly I wasn't able to keep the bike up and went down. The lady stopped a half a block later and started giving me looks. I gave her a piece of my mouth and left.

Glad you're OK Jon. It's because you're Chinese. Ever since the Chinese attacked CTU on Monday, it's open season on us.

Glad you are OK. I won't let my kids on a bike without a lid, but I never wear one and am a nut case about being fully geared on the motorcycle. I'm finally to the point where I might start.

Be careful of people opening thier car doors as well. The dummies do this all the time without even thinking of looking for cars or bike riders. How much did your heart rate go up during the experience?

Glad you are alright.

I commute around Chicago on a bicycle everyday. I never where a helmet, but I always think to myself that I should since I always wear one on the motor bike. Anyway I have come close a few times to getting hit by cars, usually it's because I'm scoping some T&A walking on the sidewalk and don't focus on whats coming up ahead of me. I have hit two people in the last six months though, but they are soft unlike cars and usually opoligize for not looking where they are going. I hate tourists, looking up at the fucking buildings and then smack a 200 pound man runs their ass over.
