I've been on since 8am and it hasnt dropped for me all day. I have a feeling there was a problem on the web backbone today that only affected some people.

I run on Att's (comcast now) cable server then the site runs through verios servers which run on my companies network and finnaly into the web server that houses our site.

AOL uses numerous differnt companies for thier bandwidth (one of them being my company) My guess is one of them went down (say sprint for example) and if say Jims comapny also uses sprints network he would have been down too even though he was not on AOL.

hops are normal. The internet is huge you gotta get there somehow. That info is basicly a road map. Its telling you what route you tookto your destination and how long the trip took.
