I think my PC died...

Ok guys, I have a feeling my PC died. I'm normally pretty good at getting PCs up and running, but this one I think is just dead.

Brief description:
Woke up this afternoon, walked over to PC to check email. Bumped mouse to get it out of screensaver/powersave mode. Nothing happened. Hit reset button on case. Nothing happened. Hit power button on case. Nothing happened. Unplugged PC from wall to shut it off, plugged back in, turned PC back on. Booted up, went through memory check. Memory check completed, went to start it's normal boot sequence, and screen went black. Once again no response from power or reset buttons. Unplugged and rebooted several times with same result. I can hear the HDs turn on, and the CDROM drives cycle.

So... if I can't figure out what the heck happened, I think I'm gonna have to get a new one. But I'm low on cash, and have also been out of the loop as far as computers go... for a LONG time.

I'm thinking I can jack most of the parts out of the dead PC (hard drives, video card, firewire card, etc.) Do you think it's possible for me to build something better than what I've got, new, for under, say, $600, assuming I move all the peripherals over?

What I have:
800MHz P3
768MB RAM <--- I assume I won't be able to use this on the new PC
2 HDs (40GB and 80GB)
CD-RW
DVD+RW

What I'd like:
~2+ GHz P4 or equivalent AMD
~512MB RAM
Tall case... something with lots of drive bays so I can get both HDs, both CD drives, be able to reconnect my floppy drive, and maybe enough room for one more HD?

Uhhhh... can't think of anything else. Main things I use it for is surfing and video editing. Think it can be done?

I've been on that website for the past half an hour and for the life of me I can NOT get a 4550 to configure for less than $850, matching all the options as you describe above...

That is my guess...sounds like you just need a new Power Supply. You can pick up a really good Antec 350W for about $65...or you can get a cheap one for like $25.

Thanks guys. A blown PS is what a friend-of-a-friend suggested too. He's gonna swing by my place on Monday and take a look at it...

Thanks for the replies

Does not sound like a blown power supply, sounds like a problem with either a video refresh rate, or the video card. Your getting power to the board, drives, CD-Rom's etc, but as soon as soon as the OS tries to get to the GUI, screen goes blank.

Boot the computer off a bootable floppy, and see if it comes up.....preferably with some sort of diagnostics

Part that worries me is the:

"Once again no response from power or reset buttons. Unplugged and rebooted several times with same result."

Not so fast my friend. My GF's comp was doing the same things he has described....I pulled the PS and put in a new one....and it runs like a champ.

Interesting, I've never ever run into or heard about dying power supplies working like that. I retract my original statement.

There are many different voltages that come from the power supply. The 12v may still work and that would explain why the cd rom and fan would still turn on. You may be missing voltage to the motherboard though. Probably power supply, just take a voltmeter to it.

It was the last thing I could think of. I was surprised as well it was the PS.

Well, it is the cheapest part to try and replace, and if it is not it, you can use it for most any computer anyways....so not a loss of a purchase

Ahhhhhhhhhh. I now have a prob with my comp. Start it up and it sounds really loud. Sounds like a fan or something that isnt quiet anymore for some reason. It gradually gets better as the comp warms up. It's kinda weird.

Hmmm. Ok guys, well today is the first time I've been awake at home for more than ~30 minutes, so I booted my PC (I shut it off last week when I found the problem, and just left it off all weekend.) Booted up fine this morning. ??? Kinda pisses me off that it DID boot, because now I have nothing to troubleshoot against.

I'm really thinking it's the PS. If it were the video card... wouldn't the PC continue to boot, I just wouldn't have video? Cuz when it was screwing up, everything stopped. The "read" light on the HD was on, but it wasn't reading (I can normally hear the HD when it reads.)

And now that I think about it (what's leading me more and more towards the PS)... the last time I tried to copy a CD "on-the-fly" (as in, CD to be copied in one drive, blank in another, so both drives were running at the same time) the PC would reboot. I'm wondering if the PS is just weak, and couldn't power both devices, so the voltage dropped and the PC rebooted?

As for trying a floppy.. I would... but I don't have a floppy drive in the PC (who uses floppies anymore??)
