i forgot what they called it but from mainly i believe and so did he the pressure i put on my palms while breaking on the track i created a davit in my palm right under my thumb. it shifted muscle tissue over exposing my nerve and main blood supply to my thumb ans index finger.
it got to the point i couldnt feel, move my thumb and the blood flow stopped causing me to kill tissue cells for the lack of blood.
they wanted to cut me open but i said fuck that, and been using hand therapy on my own. it seems it works cause its getting better and i don't have that issue to much. by next year for sure, ill be back on the track kicking some ass again!
Did the dr opt for you to get surgery? Cause in some cases it could get worse. I type all day long, 8 hours straight, and every hour i have to take a break to do hand excercises (per therapist). Do this:
-Hold your hand out as if you were going for a hand shake withthe thumb up, then pull it back and down until you feel the stretch, hold for 5 counts.
-Hold your hands out as if you were playing slap with palms facing downward (not sure what the proper term is), and spread your thumbs out (only thumb) until you feel the stretch.
What you should also do is rub the palm of your hand often, focusing on the thumb area since that's where you are having pains.
I have problems with my right thumb do to a sports injury (hyperextended from a b-ball) so i off/on pains too.
Lastly, when you sleep, try to keep your hands open, most people ball it up into a fist which is a nono, try trapping it under the pillow or wear a brace. Good luck, hope it gets better since you are painter and all...
