Maryland wants to ban sportbikes

I admit, it was stolen from the COMPoST mailing list. But I thought people would be interested in it here:

http://www.wtop.com/?nid=25&sid=1154314

Read the comments if you get the chance (button link in the upper left). I'm pretty torn over this one. One one hand, I'm pissed at the rider for being retarded on a bike and causing the accident and giving all of us a bad rep. On the other, I'm pissed at car drivers because now the "riding like every car is out to get me" mentality isn't just justified, it's necessary.

Hmm, slightly inaccurate title. That's a pretty big accident from the chain of events.

First problem: The beltway should be left for the statey's...

Second problem: Officer used his vehicle to try and stop a motorcycle. Resulting in hitting a civilian's car, that was the cops fault, what if he had stopped the bike? Killing the motorcycle, and still hitting another car?

And they had a right to pursue since it was a felony.

The beltway is like a cat and mouse game with idiot squids and cops... they run for fun cause they know they won't be pursued for a long chase... and there are tons of exits and different jurisdictions it runs through... Fun if your dumb.

I don't blame them, that area, especially PG county is like anarchy on the streets... its where I learned how to street ride... insanity.

Hmmm ...seems the cops crash caused the chain of events. What he was doing to be in that position seems irrelevant to me.

I thought there were rules of engagement, that cops try to follow to stop this very thing from happeneing, as well as some states/towns having a "no chase" policy.

this seems oddly like the gun debate. Sportbikes don't kill people, people kill people. Any jackass with a car trying to flee a felony could've done that.

What's next banning sport cars? Tuners? Exotics? They all go fast and get into high speed chases w/ the police. You see more high speed car chases on those police videos than you ever see sport bikes. Besides this is nothing more than P.O.S. politicans trying to please the public and get more votes.

I read somewhere they're trying to ban production of exotics such as ferarris, lambos, etc... this world is coming to an end soon, I hope to just sit on my bike and watch it go down

how's it bikers fault for the cop hitting the other car? From the way its written, the biker avoided the cop by swerving, but somehow that made the cop plow into the other car? yeah, um, ok.

they dont state the age of the cops involved...but my thinking is that one of them may have been recently newer to the force and coulda been in a pissy mood...standard rule of thumb these days for cops is if its too dangerious for civilians, they are to break off any chase...but that always depends on districts, local or state pd and whatnot...everyone should be following chp rules and follow at a distance unless other peoples lives are at risk...the bike rider was riding like an a-hole yes....but there was zero reason for the cop to try to run him off the road seeing it was just eluding cops...thats the dumbest thing, and hopefully the cops and lawmakers understand what really happened here was a bad decision from the cop that caused this whole tragic incident...if its known that people on bikes are gonna run...then get a freaking chopper involved and follow that way, or wait for the dumbass to run out of gas, or hits up a gas station...

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

Wow old news...this has been debated on other bike sites since it broke June 1st. Maryland stands a snowball's chance in hell in banning sportbikes. The story is so old, I can't remember if they repremanded the LEO for his stupidity that lead to the deaths and injuries....all they need is a 1 second shot of his plate number, call off the pursuit arrest him at theie leisure, but it's so obvious the guy wanted his dashboard video to make COPS or Wildest Police Chases, if I was the Chief of Police I would fire him...highspeed chase with death and injuries because of a speeding violation And the police say they are highly trained...yeah right

Sometimes goodbye is your second chance.

Operating a motorcycle. So easy, even a caveman can do it. Knowing how to ride? Priceless.

Rider's fault for being a dumb ass. Shouldn't laws be related to who's commiting the crime? If the dummy were riding a KZ1000, he'd still be a dumb ass that was breaking a law. Enforce current laws.

Seems to be the problem with illegal immigration, gun control, and other things: enforce current laws.

Felony gives the officer the right to pursue, its his discretion whether or not he does...

Some of ya thought it was only for speeding it was a felony...

High speed chases are like every day traffic violations out there... I remember my first day on the job, delivering to a construction site, I counted 15 cop cars chasing one hooligan... I'm just a country boy from colorado, that shite scared me so bad I couldn't sleep for a couple nights....

I'd like to see them ban production on Ferraris and Lambos. I don't think the Italians would go for that.

You'll be surprised at what the EU comes up with. Currently they have a couple asshats trying to make it illegal to build a vehicle that can exceed 100mph. Who do you think is responsible for the 186mph limiter on new bikes? It was that or the EU was gonna ban any importation of big 4 bikes in the EU. Currently the 155mph car limit in the EU is voluntary.

As for sportbikes. Well one state isnt gonna be able to ban them. With the shear number of retards running around on them they could piss off enough people that a federal ban could be a reality. All they have to do is ban importation and registration of new bikes. People didnt think they could ban the sale of 3 wheel ATV's either. Guess what you cant buy new anymore? Wasnt really that they were unsafe, its just people were complete morons on them. Same nearly happened to PWC (and its still being fought over last I heard). But look on teh bright side if they do this to sportbikes. It will make the ones we have now sell for some very high $$$.

some people are just stupid. getting rid of sport bikes would only eliminate one outlet of stupidity for that person. if bikes were the problem, we would all be that way.

however, you gotta agree that sport bikes are pretty powerful for the street. that plus irresponsible riders/car drivers leads to a lot of problems.

Exactly, who says you can't be a hooligan on a BMW touring bike or even a Harley

They could pass a law to limit horsepower though I think France has a 100 hp limit on street bikes. BMW had to make a special French-spec K1200S with only 100 hp instead of the 167 in it's true form.
