5 witnesses, about an hours ago i held my breath for 2:34.78 seconds!!!

ive been doing some free diving and well my last recored in the pool with my neighbors was clocked at 1:45, 1st attempt i did that!

then my 2nd attempt was 2:35

wasnt to bad tonight at all holding it that long but it did take some controlled effort.

as soon as i came up i took a breath and another drink of my beer!

Holy crap! That's damn good. I remember watching Pros v. Joes and the Olympic swimmer held his breath for 5:14.

How many beers were you holding on to to keep you under?

I was a swimmer for 10 years and there were times when I felt like taking a break, so I'd go for a flip turn and go straight down to the bottom of the 15 ft. pool. I wish I would have timed myself, but I swear I'd stay down there for at least a couple minutes without a struggle.

Now, I'd be lucky to get over a minute. That's damn impressive for a smoker Ody.

Ever get kicked out of a pool for making a lifeguard have to get in the water? Did a dead mans float long enough to get the lifeguard to jump in and swim over. Just befre she got to me I popped up and said hi. Ended up getting the boot for the day.

Actually, I have

I use to do a little diving as well, so I'd do some crazy flip off the high dive and swim across the pool along the bottom, instead of getting out at the ladder. Well, this was across the diving well and to the other side of the 25 yard pool. I heard one of the lifeguards blow there whistle saying they were going in, so I walked over there and as she popped up from searching, she pointed at me and threw me out of the pool.

The only time I ever remember feeling like my lungs were going to explode was during my lifeguard exam. Since everyone working at the pool knew I was a national qualifying swimmer, they decided to give me the "hard" test. Well, this consisted of me dragging a 300 pound life guard from the bottom of the pool, pretending he had a broken neck. This guy knew what he was doing, so he could force himself on the bottom and had oxygen with him as well. It felt like I was down at the bottom of this diving well for hours trying to pull this guy off the bottom. I came to the surface with him, handed him off to another life guard (it was still part of the test), climbed out, and literally collapsed.

Congrats! Breaking the 2:30 mark is really tough, actually everything past about 1:30 is hard.

I swam varsity through HS (placed 8th at state in 2003, we rocked) and Division I through college. I was easily the best Colgate breathholder and my bests were: 100 yard freestyle, no breath, :57 seconds and a 2:15 Breathhold followed by a flipturn and 25 yard freestyle and another 15 second pause. All in all I'm most proud of the 100 free no-breather; there aren't many swimmers in the world who can do one of those, and the only other guy on my team to do it passed out in the water. Oxygen deprivation is a great feeling- your arms and legs start going numb, you know they're moving but you can't feel them. That first breath of air is fantastic.

Ken, have you tried "packing oxygen"?

You take some super deep, slow breaths, and pack it into your lungs. It will super oxgenate your blood and allow you to go longer.

I'm a terrible swimmer, but I learned this from a friend of mine who used to do that deep free dive stuff. He could almost double his underwater time by packing compared to just taking a deep breath.
