Just saw it in a news brief. Looks bad, guess it happened during rush hour, and parts of the bridge fell into the river. There were pedestrians and bicycles in addition to auto/truck traffic.

That is crazy. I wondered what that bridge looked like prior to this. That bridge seemed pretty darn big. This is what I could find:

Prayers sent to all that were affected by this.

I believe the bridge is the one in the upper left of the pic

Wow. As an Civil Engineer, we case studied a crapload of bridge collapse, most famously the Tacoma Narrows bridge. It's been a long while since something like this happened. There's supposed to be stress tests and fractures analysis done on a regular basis. It will be very interesting to see what happened. So sad and terribly ill-timed for the affected commuters

Exponent will likely analyze the collapse.

Local officials said three people had died. Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge still standing.

what's crazy is I was supposed to be on that highway when it collapsed. My mom called me on my way to strat's and asked me why I changed my plans, I thought she was smoking the funny stuff until she told me what happened. My original itinerary was to go straight from Miami to Minneapolis and I'd be driving on that highway. I ended up rescheduling so I could come home earlier.

absolutely insane...my thoughts and prayers to those that died, were injured, and the family members

Yaw, that's the bridge geewiz...
I lived in the cities for six years - crossed that bridge many times and even one night did some climbing up on the underside of it over the river with some boy. There woudn't have been pedestrians *on* it, but there would be underneath it where it goes over surface streets and I think some bike/walking paths.

It's a huge bridge and a main thoroughfare through the cities from downtown to the NE suburbs. I thought at first it was the Hennepin Ave. bridge because of the green metal.

So scary. Glad you weren't on it Meech. Still have a lot of friends up there.

I heard on CNN that the bridge was under repair. My guess is someone made a wrong calculation on which support beam to replace and it weakened the bridge more than expected.

Wow, talk about a red flag. Possibly a pier failure that caused subsequent failures down the line. Were you in the design group down at SIU?

Well, my wife drove to Minneapolis this afternoon... she got there right after the collapse, got stuck in traffic and spent a couple of hours finding a way around the collapse.

Luckily, she called me and gave me the heads up. She is fine, but she was going to a conference, and no telling if any of her peers were on the bridge.

Also, I didn't see it mentioned above, but apparently the bridge landed on a train as well.

You get so used to over engineering everything, that sometimes the simplest solution slips out of your mind. I have a notepad next to my bed because it's not that uncommon for me to dream of a way that's a lot easier and cheaper to manufacture something I'm designing. It kind of scares me sometimes

if it did land on a train, everyone in the region should be glad that there is no chemical issue on top of all this.

Operating a motorcycle. So easy, even a caveman can do it. Knowing how to ride? Priceless.
