Investment Advice

Ok, well I am getting that signing bonus from work, and I'd like to do a short term investment with it, about a year, so that I don't spend it before I move out to cali. What would be the highest yield investment I could make w/o taking too much of a risk. Any advice appreciated.

There really isn't anything you can do for a short time period like a year. I would say play the stock market, but it's in shambles right now. Actually now is the time to get in and buy, cause it will eventually go up, but it's still a risk to lose all your cash.

No offense but I would speak with a reputable financial advisor rather than post up in a motorcycle forum.

Opinions are like a$$....

Two things.... First, he's looking to invest a sign-on bonus. Which normally is small money - 5 to 10k. Not hundreds of thousands.

Second, there are many people on this "motorcycle" forum that do invest money, work at reputable companies, and/or have some common investment knowledge.

Most people would bank that small amount of money in savings.. 2% to 3% is usually the max. A small money market is low risk and gains can be in the 3% to 5% range. Other investment options (that can have larger gains) your money gets tied up for a min period of time... some 3 years or longer before you can pull your money. (you can get it back early, but usually take a loss)

I would give the money to me, I will take it to the Majestic Casino and play the 5-10 no limit texas hold'em game. I will quadruple your money in the year and take a 20 percent cut.

Since its really not that much money after taxes, I would just put in a savings account and sit on it. Otherwise, put it in a CD.

Money Market and CD were the two best things I could come up with, just checking to see if anyone had something I hadn't heard of maybe.

Unless you have specific plans for it in a year: Ask if you can defer it to a pre-tax contribution of some kind like a 401K.
or...
just toss the max allowable (probably $4K for your age) into a Roth IRA and be done with it.

This isn't necessarily the 'best' advice out there, but the payoff over time (I know you said 1 year, but that's short-term thinking) will be impressive.

ING has a 4.5% savings acct. thats probably your safest bet. and 4.5% isn't bad. plus, you can easily add more if you save some throughout the year.

word. if you're looking to gain a good amount of money, gotta get into riskier investments. if you just want something that you aren't going to touch, and why not get some return on it, than go with a CD or ING acct.

HSBC direct has a good online account that pays very well also. If you go with a CD, remember, you can't take that out until the year is up. If you need a more liquid investment go with one of the high yield online accounts. You could even buy treasuries with a few K, but the bond market is a little scary right now.

Pinto Bean,
I am a financial planner/consultant. If you want zero risk then go with the CD or money market. If you are willing to asume some risk there are some great stocks to buy right now. Look at Bank of America, (BAC) with a dividend yield over 5%. Others, GE, PEP, LLY, CAT, JNJ, etc. The best time to buy is when things are down. If you stick with quality multi-national companies you should be ok-even if its only one year. If you want help then PM me.

Yeah, the house I rent at school has a 20'x30' peanut-ish shaped in-ground pool and it's extremely hot down their right now. I bet I could get all sorts of honeys over to my place. The fiancée probably wouldn't like it too much though.
