Quitting Smoking

I know there is already a thread about this posted by Maynard (https://www.chicagolandsportbikes.com...itting+smoking) and I was just wondering how those who decided to quit smoking are doing. I'm quitting cold turkey after I finish this pack. The last time I tried quitting was 10 years ago and that lasted less then a week. Going to give it another try this time. Wish me luck!

Good luck... I quit I think 4 mothns ago.. and totally cold turkey. I feel great, and it's more mental than anything. I just wanted to, and so I did... only have had like 2-3 urges but never took a puff.

ill suggest to you what i know some people have done, get yourself a case of tooth picks. whenever you feel the urge to smoke, put one in your mouth for some it feels like theyre smoking again and also the taking it out and holding it putting it back in to them feels like taking a drag. It could help your idle hands from picking up an actual cigarette. you might wanna move/walk away from someone anytime they are bout to light up. because its always those times that someone offers you "just one" youre back on the wagon.

good luck, if you really really want to quit, you will.

+50 gazillion

I used coffee stirrers.. but yes, pretending to 'smoke' them helped to work through the urges and get past them...

Funny enough, I found that fake smoking a stirrer while standing around coworkers who were smoking helped even more.. (call me bass ackwards)..

i'll give that a try. i know the "act" of smoking is going to be hard to quit. i don't know what i'm going to do with all that extra time.

When I quit quit for the first time (as in from a pack and a half a day to maybe now 2-3 cigs a week) I just started running like Forrest fucking Gump - I was hacking and coughing up shit like you would no believe but it made me feel sooo crappy that i did not want to smoke - As I began to repair the old air intake manifolds, I started to feel better and was able to run more and want to smoke less - The only time I ever want to smoke now is after I ride and that is because I am more hopped up then TR Bobby

maybe you should show yourself how good you're doing by quitting and installing a quit meter

http://www.dedicateddesigns.com/qk/

shows you how much money youve saved, life saved, and cigs you havent smoked.

also lets you have a hotkey to put your quitting statistics into an email message, a forum posting or a chat room. its all about encouragement!

You'll find what works best for you... Ultimately, you just decide to stop. The rest is just busywork until your brain accepts that singular event.

Seriously.. I wish you the best with the choice.

Quitting smoking isn't all that bad.

Replacing that extra energy and time is the thing you should focus on.

I picked up a can of Skoal. My dad picked up cigars, and my mom quit 5 years ago, and she still enjoys Nicorette.

Like Arch said if you leave one or two that you know you can get to it helps just knowing they are there. Then you don't get the urge to buy them.

the thing is that i DO run and i STILL smoke. i run 20 minutes everyday on the treadmill at 6.5 to 7 speed, work out, then after the gym i light up. my lungs are so used to it. when i was in the marine corps, i knew pack and a half a day smokers who could run 3 miles in 18 minutes, freaking 6 minute miles times. i look at it this way, i quit smoking then i stop coughing sometimes uncontrollably, save money, smell better, etc, etc.

Good Luck!!

NOT EVEN A DRAG!!! Don't allow yourself a weekend cigarette, just one after work, it's got to be nothing. It's been 4 1/2 years + for me, without so much as a drag...and the last time i finished a pack in 3 hours at Kingston Mines

Just Do It!!

Yeah cold Turkey is the best way, just mentally picture yourself when you did not smoke, like when you were a kid and wonder why you didn't smoke then. You have to mentally put yourself at a time when you did not smoke and try to mimic those habits, smoking is totally unatural and you have to condition yourself back to the natural ways. Good Luck bro!

Maynard...you should try this!

Dood...you can do it! September 11 will be 2 years that I've quit. One day I woke up, had a cig in the car on the way to work and realized how awful it tasted and left the rest of the pack in my car for like 6 months and never went back! I feel great and I am saving so much money. Plus, I smell good now and running is so much easier!

Best of luck to you! You can do it!

Good luck, I quit 11/17/06, so I'm closing in on a nine months here in the next couple of days. I did it completely cold turkey. You'll be amazed at how much better you feel in the morning and throughout the day after just a couple of weeks of being off the smokes. After the first week, your body has no more physical craving, so after that, it's just a mind game. Good luck again.

I've never been a smoker, but I helped my ex quit smoking cold turkey and he smoked a pack a day for about 10 years when he quit... I went through and clean the entire house and threw away all the ashtrays, steam cleaned the carpet and furniture and had his cars interior professionally cleaned... everything was so clean and smelled so good he didn't wanna light up and ruin it... also, he kept an almost full pack of cigs and every once in a while he would get the urge to smoke and lit one up and it was so stale that he took one puff and was grossed out... During the first few weeks he also stopped hanging out with anyone that smoked so he wouldn't be influenced, but that's kinda extreme for most people...

I gave this advice to a co-worker recently too and she said it helped her a lot...

Good luck!!

I hear that only smokers know about losing their freedoms. Is that true?

It looks like most of us started running after we quit so it just depends. I didn't. But I didn't smoke a pack a day either!
