Anyone know what this is all about? It's a 50" Toshiba DLP, and I'm guessing I'm having bulb failure of some sort. I'm about to call in the warranty, but I figured someone might know what I'm in for.

Sorry for the crappy pic - but that black streak in the upper right is taunting me, and I must be rid of it. It's satellite cable provided by the building if that matters.

I dont think its a failure. My guess would be something on the optics. Are you hiding your pot in there?

I assure you that my weed is tucked safely away in my sock drawer like a normal person's. As for the optics - I can't think of what I may have done at 5am this past weekend while fumbling for the elusive 'porn button', but I doubt the Japanese engineered a setting for "annoying black stripe" that could be punched in via the remote control.

Still - I'm intrigued. Any suggestions short of reading the manual?

Open up the back and make sure there isn't some obstruction causing that. That type of defect would be very odd on DLP bulbs. I'm guessing something is loose and creating that "shadow."?

I don't recall what the warranty is, but I've only had it for a few months - so if they don't lend a hand I'll burn the building to the ground. Simple really.

Taking TV's apart is a little outside of my comfort zone, but I'll try anything short of man-love and foot massages once. (NO DUDES, NO FEET ) I haven't been within 3 feet of this thing since I plugged it in, so I'm not sure what could have obstructed it. Still, it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the tips so far!

My vote is a dead bug's leg between the light source and screen.

I'm guessing some foreign object got in there and is sitting on some part between the bulb and the screen. thats a shadow not a failure. Get it cleaned out.

The bulb is very easy to remove on my Sony. So cleaning should be easy too.

I've seen this sort of thing before. My buddy had the same problem. Oddly enough, once we got the dead hooker out of the bath tub, the spot on the TV went away. Weird huh.

Hmmm... I guess it could be some bug parts. I went on a bit of a fly swatting mission the other day, and in the blood and guts of battle I may have been careless with all the parts.

This begs the question: Is there a right way to 'clean' a TV? It won't fit in my bathtub, so I hope there's a better suggestion out there.

Air hose. Or maybe that canned air stuff they use on computer keyboards.

I see. So take the cover off, shoot some air around in there, button it all back up and test? We need a 'scratching the chin and pondering' smiley.

Sell off said tv for $100 and buy a good old fashion RELIABLE CRT tv. Mines is going on 9yrs and no dead pixels, colouring issues, shadow problems.....

BTW a 32" tv from 4' is HUGE.

Trust me Rob - I have a 13" TV in my room that will outlive me. That said, CRT's have no place in a properly outfitted bachelor pad, the ladies demand a pimp screen for watching home movies and snuff films.

(preferably ones that don't have bug parts all over em!)
