Commute on I355

Can anyone give me an idea of how bad traffic is on I355 at around 8 am heading from the direction of I55 to I88? I found a room for rent in Downers on the 6000 block of Pershing and I would need to commute approximately 6.5 miles to I88 and Highland. So probably a 5 mile ride on I355. Also vice versa, heading home on I355 from I88 to I55.

I would like for my commute time to be <= 10 minutes.

In the mornings, going North on 355 is not horrible, but slow moving traffic for sure just about every day from what I see (I'm going opposite direction). Same thing going South in the afternoons...slow but somewhat steady.

Maybe I would be better off taking the local streets like Highland/maple or whatever.

http://www.gcmtravel.com/gcm/maps_chicago.jsp

edit: i don't know if they have historical data but you can just check it in the morning when you would be commuting.

When I do go into the office I take 355 all the way up to Hoffman...NOT FUN!!! Took 1.5 hours today

For that short of a commute I would...I don't think you would do it in under 10 minutes if you jumped on 355

The commuters go North in the morning and South in the evening on 355. I always see it get 'hairy' around Roosevelt - North Ave in the AM. In the PM I never get on 355 going south it just bottles up around North Ave. You might be ok if you are staying south. And....know your alternate routes....Ogden, 31st, Butterfield, Finley, Highland, etc! Take the path less traveled!

If you're lucky, you might be able to. I live near Downers South and it takes my wife 7-10 minutes to get to work at 355/Butterfield.

yea 355 to butterfield to highland would be the way to go, in the morning shouldnt take long. but on the way home at that time your going to be cursing up a storm. sorry even side streets will take you forever. Dont get on 88 though, 88 always sucks.

How is the street Main / Highland? heading north in the morning? Is that a viable option?

You're going to hit quite a bit of traffic going through downtown DG due to train traffic. There are ways to bypass that by cutting through the surrounding neighborhood though.

Sweet, thanks everyone for the info. In anycase.. if I decide to move to Downers .. my commute will be cut from 28 miles each way to 6.5 miles each way and 1 hour in the morning and 1hour 15 in the afternoon to potentially 10-15 minutes each way.. save my self almost 2 friggen hours a day and ~150-200 dollars a month in gas!!

yea because the train crossings are all ground level it sucks, belmont to 22nd street would be a good way to go. but they are starting construction there soon to tunnel under the tracks to get rid of the ground crossing. i would imagine that thats going to cause even more traffic at main street to when that starts.

Only reason i'm moving up here is to save gas and time. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the city right now but I am willing to sacrifice. Plus it would only be short term 6 -12 months till I have a year under my belt here to move to a job downtown.

If you take the streets you are fine. I88 is a nightmare at that time. I live in Montgomery (Orchard & 30) and commute to the Walgreens Corporate Campus in Deerfield. I take 88 to 294, travel time at 5:15am, 45 mins. Travel time after 7am, 2 hrs! Coming home at 5pm If I don't stop at the gym it's 90 mins to 2hrs commute time coming up 355 to 88. NIGHTMARE! Thank god for the gym!

Route 53 is a good alternate for I355 especially during rush hours.

you would take 63rd to belmont and belmont north. Dont bother going all the way to the highway. I used to live in the 64oo block of powell right by the highschool. your commute would not be bad at all by suburban standards. I used to drive from plainfield to springfield

best route is belmont (turns into finley) right on butterfield and right on highland. I think it would take about 10 min.

Maybe I missed it but I can't believe nobody mentioned how god-awful 355 is on a bike. Even in a car with the right, or should I say wrong wheelbase you need a kidney belt. Like 20 miles of perfectly spaced bumps. The pavers should be hung by their genitals in a town square somewhere in Dupage County.
