Am I Insane

So, I'm thinking about taking an aircraft dispatching course, its 10 weeks and it goes Monday through Thursday 6pm-10pm and Saturday 8am-5pm. If I took this course I could get my dispatching certificate and maybe get hired at the airline my buddy works for. I'd be making 15,000 more a year with full benefits including free flight.

Unfortunately it would start next week the 27th and it'll come at a sacrifice of working my fulltime job already 9-5, and then going straight to class 4 hours everyday, including Wednesdays (no more strats!) Probably will pretty much gimp the riding season for me, besides weekends but I might be too exhausted by then and just wanting to rest.

So do I sacrifice the next 10 weeks of my life to make what would be probably a very worthwhile career move? This is if they get at least 10 people to take the course and so far I think there are 5-6 signed up including myself.

Hmmm...

If you do it and get the pay bump, each year you make enough post-taxes to afford a new bike.

Think of it that way.

yea right now im a computer nerd, doing web design with no benefits except health. So I think it would probably be a great move forward obviously making 15k more with benefits and free flight and i want to get into the aviation field anyway (pilot) so this would finance that nicely and help get that shiney RR

still feels like a crazy ass schedule but i guess if kids can sew shoes in haiti for 12 hours a day i can do this for 10 weeks

ABSOLUTELY!!!

It is only 10 weeks! Just a little over 2 months. It will go by so fast! Plus, you are gaining knowledge for your FUTURE! Anything that will benefit your future is so worth the time. Can you see if your FT job will allow you to bump your hours up to like 8:30-4:30 or even 8-4 so you can make it to this class?

I have been working a FT job and PT job (20 hours/wk) and going to school full time for the past 2 years. I finally got my Associates and it feels so good. Now on to the Bachelors. AND I'm much older than you!

DO IT!

Did you even have to ask this question? Small sacrifice for a short amount of time. I don't even know why you included the Strats meet in your decision, lol.

If you signed up for it before and you signed up for it again...you have your answer right there.

Airline dispatchers have THE most stressful, according to some reports, so good luck and just keep focused!

And not to mention you'll be working weird hours and you'll argue with pilots a lot. BTW, it's a free flight but it's all space available only (standby).

Commit social suicide AND get a crack at one of the most stressful jobs on the planet? Where do I sign? All seriousness, if its what you want go for it. Sometimes money isn't the only thing. If you're looking to become a pilot maybe you should become a flight instructor or something along those lines. I'm sure there are people on here that could correct me, but I think you need tons and tons of flight hours to even be considered for a commercial pilot.

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil,

You need 250 hours minimum to get your commercial ticket. There's a severe pilot shortage at the moment, so as soon as you get your commercial ticket, you can get a job with regionals. In other words, you don't need tons of hours to get a job as a commercial pilot at the moment, as a matter of fact Mesa's publish minimum for pilots are 500 TT and 100 ME.

+1

right now im at 15 hours, score!

sure dispatching isnt the road to becoming a pilot but it does help a little bit to have that extra knowledge not to mention form an employment history/relationship with an airline to maybe get hired by again down the road.

Yeah I say go for it. You'll become a better pilot and you can use it as a fall back in case you can't fly due to medical reason or whatever.

2 months is nothing, I've been going to school full time and working at least 35 hours a week for the past year. It sucks.

Your friends will all get annoyed and think you're pissed at them, and people will start saying you're a fictional internet character.
