Need Inexpensive Laptop

I'm looking at getting a laptop for work. They provide one when I am on call for my 7 day stretch, but I'd like one of my own to work from home on. Here's the thing...I want it to be fairly fast, light weight and a nice size screen (looking at databases and code puts a strain on my eyes at 2am!). I also need to be able to connect on WIFI.

I'm looking for something inexpensive. I was told that the new Vista sucks and that they don't have good drivers yet??? Really?? My companies VPN is not supporting Vista yet I hear, so If it is not an XP OS, I'll need to install it.

Suggestions?

I know that when Vista first came out, it had a lot of problems with drivers. Vista did come out 6 months ago so I would think that some of the driver issues would have been solved. Personally, I would hold out on Vista a bit longer until Microsoft fixes all the bugs in it.

The one I got from my class now all the tech stuff is going to sound dumb because I don't know any better.

It's an Epic says Geared by MSI

C7-M processor

Runs pretty fast and good wifi in it.

Inexpensive and laptop don't mix + if you are looking to downgrade to XP than you will run into driver compatibility issues as there is new hardware in these things that doesn't have non-Vista drivers. I've tired this several times for customers, against my recommendation, when Vista came out and each time there was at least 1 or 2 items that didn't have backwards compatible drivers.

This is pretty much for work which means I would use it only for the occasional work from home, or when I'm on call. I don't need a superstar notebook with all theb ells and whistles...I need something that i can dial into my VPN with and multiple putty/telnet/remote shell sessions with at the same time if need be.

Right now I am dialing in from my home pc, which frankly sucks. When I'm on call it's for 7 days straight 24 hrs a day. During that week I am glued to my house, which sucks. I'd like a little freedom. I'd ove to find a notebook with an XP OS...but so far all the new ones I've been looking at have Vista.

Best of luck with that - Not sure they exist at that cost

You can always try buying a used laptop to keep costs down. Its kind of a risk though and probably won't have a warranty.

Check out www.hpshopping.com. The new Compaq C500T (HP brand) starts at $450 new. If you put money into it...spend it on memory upgrades for Vista. Good luck.

Well, I found an Acer...everything I need except I have to add another 512 of Ram. $400. Can't beat it. Looks like it's down to the Acer and the Dell for $100 more. Opinions on both Brands? I'm a big fan of Dell...but know nothing about Acer.

That dell is shit it's got Vista basic on it. Get XPP has less bugs.

Get the Acer if it's got XPP.

http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/def...px?EDC=1210356

I can get it to you at cost for 661 won't make a penny on it but I'll help out a fellow clsb member.

Might be able to find it on newegg as well for cheap.

What are the specs on the Acer?
For me, all things being equal, I would buy a Dell.

Don't get the 64 bit version if you aren't sure if your works AV won't support it. Ran into that before.

I would have a hard time with a company (Dell) that has lied to investors over the last 4 years about their earnings. They "fudged" their numbers to look better than they actually were...what other areas of the company...or product lines might they be misrepresenting??? It's your money...and just my02.

FYI...HP is #1 in market share and customer satisfaction in the Notebook market.

Ken...That's the one I saw also. I saw it at the new Oswego Super Walmart. Once of the computer dorks I ork with (totally great guy...and knows his stuff!) sent me there. He said it was a great buy for the $$. Ram is cheap. Looks like this may be the one I am going for..

This is not always the case some laptops do not work with XPP the drivers are not available. Wiping the OS and re-imaging the laptop is not always easy on a machine that did not originally come with that OS. My customers have told me it takes sometimes hours to perform.

Intel Celeron processors are also the lowest level of procs. That Walmart model is a pos.

Spend a bit more and get something with a better proc and stay away from Vista until they come out with an updated version.
