Too fat for New Zealand

Won't they just pack the pounds back on once there?

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,312056,00.html

NEW YORK ó New Zealand immigration officials are keeping a U.K. wife from joining her husband "down under" because they say she is too fat, the Daily Mail reports.

British citizens Rowan Trezise, 33, and Richie Trezise, 35, are living apart as she tries desperately to shed the pounds needed to comply with New Zealand guidelines that immigrants maintain a healthy BMI, or body mass index.

BMI is a weight-height ratio that estimates percentage of body fat. The New Zealand Immigration Service requires all applicants to undergo a complete medical examination, which includes body size measures like "waist circumference."

The regulations were supposedly put into place for budget reasons. The country's health care system cannot afford to open its doors to overweight immigrants, a spokesman for New Zealand's Fight the Obesity Epidemic explained to the Daily Mail.

Over half of New Zealand adults and nearly one-third of New Zealand children are already overweight or obese, according to the group. Those figures are expected to rise, as are the health problems associated with being overweight, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Richie Trezise managed to trim two inches off his waistline, the Daily Mail reports, bringing his BMI down and allowing him to take the first step toward the couple's dream of resettling in New Zealand.

Rowan Trezise is alone at home and still struggling.

In an interview with the paper, Richie Trezise admitted his wife is having trouble losing the weight ó a difficulty which may force the couple to abandon their overseas plans and stay in the U.K. for good.

They've set Christmas as their deadline.

It's funny that country won't accept someone because they are over weight by whatever amount? And I thought I was messed up. It's called a disorder, and don't you think she is already looked at as a disabled person for having a disorder.

Do they have a sign at immigration that says "No Fat Chicks"?

Relax, ladies. Yes, I find it funny (fucked up funny) that a country won't let overweight people in.. that's like saying Japan won't allow Flounder over there cause his eyes aren't chinky enough. ANd i'm not going into the science of it all, i come from a 3rd world country, it's either you're fat or you're not, none of this disorder shenanigan. Flame suit on!

I'm good for New Zealand.

That stupid calculator says my BMI is normal at between 18.5-24. No freaking way as I am one skinny mofo.

BMI is horseshit. Take A body builder with almost no fat. Lets say they're 6' tall and weigh 210lbs.

That's overweight, but I could imagine one might be that heavy with all the muskels.

But if you do a true test where you measure their skin or something like that, I forget, you would see that their fat content is close to nothing.

I think that BMI only works for women. Women can get away with being 5'8" and 130lbs.

I read recently that Australia might be implementing a Fat tax for airlines, where obese passengers have to pay more since it takes more fuel to fly them around...

Also, the NZ thing reminds me of the Ali G movie where they only let 'Fit' women enter the country

I like the intent, but BMI is NOT the right way to implement it. It is of course, one of the simplest overall indicators, but it is highly inaccurate for anyone in very good shape.

A couple of years ago I was in the shape of my life, running and lifting 6 days a week, sometimes double sessions, and at 6'2" 200 lbs, I would have been overweight on the BMI scale. I would have had to get down to 190, which I think would require belemia and having some ribs removed to get to average. I think if you touch weights at all you have to throw the BMI index is thrown out the window, otherwise olympic sprinters with 4% bodyfat would be banned from NZ.
