This is SPARTA!!

Wow, after doing some research on the actual history of that battle, I was really blown away by how much of that movie is actually rooted in fact!! From the infants being cast away, to the child military academy to the terms "we will fight in the shade" and "come back with your shield, or on it". Even the hidden trail that did them in...all absolute fact.

There were, of course, some discrepancies...there were actually 7000 Greek soldiers with the 300, the battle was a result of Greek's backing of an uprising in Persia by an old Greek province and the Spartans were actually influenced to fight by the words of the Oracle...

...pretty cool stuff, and very surprising. I thought most of the movie was pure entertainment.

What kind of smart ass comment was that? If you'd ever care to discuss history in detail, I'd be glad to sit down with you over a few beers. It's sort of a hobby.

I'm well aware of the battle itself, it's the details of the movie that were actually based in fact that surprised me.

I don't even pretend to know anything beyond the bullet points of that historical period... and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Sounds good! Pressfield the author is considered on of the best experts on Sparta.

That is also where the saying "Go tell the Spartans" comes from.

See edit above, I wasn't referring to your post...although it's good info to have. I know I'll own you in Helenistic Political debates.

I was going to thank you for a nudge towards a good book, until your oddly placed epilogue turned up.

Sometimes you surprise me with the music and stuff you post up I do not know if you are just discovering it or have liked it all along and want to turn others onto it.

The comment was definitely tongue in cheek.

Most of the popular accounts only mention the Spartans soldiers. However, there were other Greek City-states involved and the Spartans themselves brought quite a few slaves along as well to help out. It's still really impressive given the size of the Persian force. A textbook example of how to tactically utilize terrain.

But the movie does keep to the story quite well.

Gates of Fire is a great book.

My apologies then. As for the music, been diggin' on it for a long time. The old man was a professional rock drummer. Been around it my whole life

The offer still stands for some beers, always enjoy discussing history with a like mind.

I definitely need to check that book out. It's right up there with Devil in the White City on my to do list.

Roughly 300 to 20,000 was the kill ratio...well, along with 1000 Greek soldiers that also stuck around with the 300.

Generally you don't learn history in that much detail unless its a specific class. I took Euro history in high school and we didn't cover all the wars of Greece.

I loved that book. Can't comment with any authority on the actual historical accuracy of it but it was a great read. Everything that the city went through and how innovative it was, I want to read it again
