Did you guys see this? Lead warning in pet toys.

Fox news had some dude on talking about how they are testing pet toys now for lead.... This overseas, going to China deal is actually starting to bug me. We need to get the UN on their case to start regulating. I've learned so much about how bad it is over there and its not cool at all. Do we have to go back to the 70's and start posting bumperstickers all over the place that say "buy USA" to get corporate america to stop sacrificing our economy and health to save a few pennies?

-------------------

Anyway - Any pet toy that is painted, such as a little ball that has painted graphics on it or what have you is highly likely to contain lead contaminents.

So this dude on the news advised everyone to avoid purchasing and to throw away any toys that may be painted until testing has been completed.

First off, most dog toys are garbage and potentially harmfull to your animals. Dogs enjoy ropes and tennis balls just as much as squeekie balls and painted toys. Anyone who gives their dog squeekie toys is not thinking clearly. I laugh everytime I'm in petsmart at how many vet bills were racked up via all those darn toys. The worst is the battery opperated ones. Duh!!!! dogs chew. People don't think they are going to get whatever it is out of the toy and ingest it?????? The last thing a dog needs is battery acid in the stomach

I was talking about this with the wife the other day, shortly thereafter she found numerous websites for baby toys that are only made in america.

I wholeheartedly agree. But there is so much being outsourced now. Its hard to avoid purchasing something that wasn't made there.

There are major manufacturers that are moving production for product components to china, although the assembly may be performed in the US.

But yea...

The comment was directed more at the the blanket "buy US, screw chinese stuff and corporations saving a few pennies" sentiment.

I think its obvious to any windowlicker that people would pay more for a safe product than an unsafe one.

The issue is that labor cost /nation of origin is not valid proxy for product safety, contrary to knee-jerk reactions to that effect. The huge glut of products liability cases against US mfrs. is plenty proof of that.

No, you don't, at least not entirely. No mfr. is going to sell for less than it cost them to make it. You will not pay the same for a product made with $1/hr Chinese labor as you would one made by $20/hr(including wage/healthcare/FICA/Tax) American Labor.

True, but we have higher safety standards here, and companies here know they will be sued heavily if their products are unsafe, so there is a greater chance of toys made in the US to be safer than Chinese made toys .

Consider that China send umpteen bajillion different products, and that problem products are something along the lines of >.00001% of what gets sent over. (even if ridiculously sensationalized by the media)

Also consider that US importers typically have indemnification clauses in their contracts w/ Chinese mfrs, which means that the Chinese mfrs must pay all or part of any product liability judgment against the importer. They also completely sabotage any goodwill they might have by issuing products know to be tainted, and no importer will again deal with them.

Theoretically this is incorrect. supply/demand works down the chain. Meaning, if he chooses not to buy and others do as well production of the product falls and buying of raw materials declines. Less demand of raw materials brings down those prices and manufactures can make things for less. However, this takes time and depends on other uses of like raw materials. His comment is still valid. If we won't pay for Chineses or American products those prices have to come down
