Reminder Gun owners

The individual in this article was a co-worker that I worked with before he left the department. As a reminder secure your weapons when children are present. And yes I do feel this incident is the faults of the parents. Here is the article.

Boy, 3, finds gun, then kills himself
Nov. 30, 2007
Weapon reportedly taken from nightstand
By Mark Hornickel

A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself Thursday morning after apparently finding a gun in a nightstand.

Kenosha police were called about 9:23 a.m. to the home of Michael and Jessica Lesnick, 6019 55th St., where the boy had suffered a single gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to St. Catherine's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police Sgt. Eric Larsen said.

Police identified the boy as Joshua Lesnick.

Larsen said Joshua was at the single-family, two-story home with his 33-year-old mother and 5-year-old brother. Joshua's father was at work.

The mother reportedly was in a second-floor bathroom when she heard a single gunshot, Larsen said. She then went to the couple's bedroom and saw Joshua lying on the floor.

Police said Joshua had found the family-owned .40-caliber semi-automatic gun in a nightstand in the bedroom.

The 5-year-old was on the home's first floor at the time, Larsen said.

Larsen said the shooting remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed.

Larsen urged parents and gun owners to be sure their guns are always locked and hidden from children.

"Any time there's a gun in the house, parents should be aware that they should be kept locked up, separate from ammunition," he said. "Ammunition should be locked up and the key should be kept where children cannot find it."

A review of Kenosha News archives showed the last accidental shooting involving children in Kenosha County occurred in May 1999. According to Kenosha News stories a 13-year-old boy shot his 12-year-old classmate in the chest with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun inside the suspect's Pleasant Prairie home.

The suspect reportedly told officers he thought the handgun was unloaded because the magazine had been removed. However, there was a bullet in the chamber. The suspect also said he had played with the guns during the previous four months and showed the guns to friends.

He was later sentenced to one year of probation.

Terrible.
Parents must assume that kids are crafty and really keep them out of reach.

It is a catch 22. You keep a gun loaded and ready to go because if you need to stop an intruder you do not have time to go to another area to get the secured bullets. You need it accessible, hot and ready to go.
But the downside or risk is that someone can get hurt if they are not well educated in firearm use, such as a child.
Very tough call and sad situation. Perhaps a keypad locked box is a good compromise as long as only the responsible occupants of the house have the code. This will slow the process of getting to the loaded gun but may be worth the trade off if kids are in the house.

Well considering he was in the military and then a federal officer that would explain why he had a semi automatic

semi auto is practicly all pistols you will see.

each time you fire a new round gets chambered and it recocks the gun for you. (till you run out of bullets)

where as nonsemiauto means you have to recock the weapon each time.

I'll piss people off with this, but that's never stopped me before:

When you place something else as a higher priority above the safety of your own child, you need your head examined.

If you just leave it in the nightstand WHILE YOU ARE IN THE BED.. OK.. but there's no reason to leave it out and accessible WHEN YOU ARE NOT HOME. That's just fucking dumb.

I feel bad for their loss but holy shit they need to see the error of their ways so it does not repeat itself with their other child or their child's friends in the future.

Everyone Exaggerates

Probally not going to be a next time considering they will probally be charged.

Tho IMHO a loaded gun no matter the type is dangerous in the wrong hands. So with that said it doesnt matter what kind of weapon he had or owned.

I pity the family. I couldn't imagine losing a child.

A federal officer should have known better. Unfortunately its the "it won't happen to me" mentality.

My gun can have a bullet in the chamber but not cocked. it is hard to pull the trigger for the first round then stays cocked after that. Might of made a difference depending on the kids strength. Wont matter in my case. I dont keep bullets at home. There is a higher chance of this happening then my home getting robbed at gunpoint.

+1

I have a pistol safe at home next to my bed and the long arms are in a full size safe in the basement. There is also a pistol safe at the office in my desk. I don't trust my employees any more than my kids. Less, if it comes down to it.

I see two problems with the biosafe. It is loud when it opens, and if it were set to my fingerprint, my wife would not be able to use it. I have used the gun vault with great success.

Guess it is supposed to be similar to a slide cocking, would be cooler if it just said, "BIO VAULT!!!! OPEN!!!!" at the same time...

If you are involved in a home intrusion, you want every advantge. You want to know where they are, what stair thay are on by the squeak of it, where the skateboard is your daughter always leaves out so you do not trip over it, what weapon you are using, and what your backstop is. It is terrifying, but if you have an edge, keep it. You know your house, you are on your own home turf, you need to defend it.
Keep quiet, defend yourself and your family, get law enforcement over there asap.

Do you keep your keys on you at all times and our of reach of your kids? I guess you can get the combo version, but almost everyone gets the keyed version. It is better than nothing, but still not ideal. Nothing really is and we can find fault with anything. IMO, if you are serious about being safe at home get an alarm system.

That safe is a really good idea I'm gonna look into that when I move. I agree with Arch when he said if you aren't at home lock up the gun, but the accident could have been prevented had he not had the clip in the gun and the gun cocked the first time. Then there wouldn't have been a round in the chamber and no 3 year old kid will be able to cock the gun after putting in the clip.

Best thing to do though is keep that safe and just pop it open if you need your handgun.

That and the Alarm system I think that is just as important and worth every penny.

Too bad for the family big mistake and horrible trajedy.
