For anybody thinking about getting a puppy...

This article just came out in newsweek. It's a must read for anyone thinking about getting a puppy. While the article is watered down, it is quite telling.

while there are issues with mills - I tend to not side with the HSUS.

yea, I dont like how mills get away with doing business. How are fines 100,000$ for copying a movie, yet if you enslave 150 animals to a cruel lifestyle you get a 5K fine.

And I agree...the HSUS tends to put hobby breeders (people who show, hunt and trial their dogs) into the same category as commercial breeders. However any avenue that let's the general public know the evils of mills is good! If people would STOP frequenting and supporting pet stores who sell dogs and kittens, it would drive the millers out of business.

I breed and show. in the past 12 years I have had 4 litters (3 min pin litters, 1 Doberman litter)... 12 puppies total, with only 9 surviving. of the 9 surviving 5 are champions, 1 is 2 points from being a champion and the rest are spayed/neutered and in amazing pet homes. Breeding, when done right and for the right reasons costs A LOT of money. People would be horrified to know how much we spend to breed a litter. I have never once even come close to breaking even...

I have had at least 50 calls from people looking for puppies as Xmas presents. I then have to go into my rant about how puppies need to be a well thought out FAMILY decision with everyone in agreement, puppies should never be bought as a gift, reputable breeders won't breed litters around the holidays yadda yadda yadda... and being the instant gratification society we are, I'm sure those people ran to the local pet store to get a puppy as soon as they hung up with me. Come Feb, 50% or more of those puppies will be in shelters.

It is...but it's a good interview. They leave out the very gorey details of what has been found at these mills... but it should make some people open their eyes a bit.

I sleep easy knowing that I went to the breeders house and saw their operation. They had several breeding pairs, but all were VERY well cared for and happy. They had something like 20 pups of different ages but all were happy and relatively free roaming in a nice heated building. I think I paid like $175 for my dog. My poor sister paid something like $1300 for hers from Petsmart.
