Business casual dress

I need to update my wardrobe for a new job. The new place is business casual. Nice slacks, dress shirt, (no suits and ties for day to day stuff). A fine weave sweater or V-neck shirt would be acceptable too.

I've only worked at very casual places in the past. Therefore, thats all I have in my closet. Jeans and polos shirt have always been the norm. Even gym shoes and a t-shirt are fine on occisaion. So that's the majority of what I have.

Any tips on a good place to go? I know I can go to almost any place in the mall and just look around. But I'd like someplace with good service and someone who actually wants to help.

Any tips on what I should get? I'd obviously like things that are versitle so I can swap stuff around. I obviously don't want to look like I'm wearing the same thing every week. Any pointers?

Budget is somewhat tight. I will probablly drop a few hundred, ($300-$500) to start with and then build from there as cash allows

Some of the stuff in Banana Republic works well and looks OK. Check them out when they'll have a sale (may be now, I have no idea).

Find a good drycleaner right now, its worth it. Half my closet is from banana republic, the other half from Nordstrom. I love banana's clothes, and Nordstrom's service is awesome. You get what you pay for.

BR is pretty pricey. Check out K&G, cheap stuff there.

Check out Bachrach and Joseph A. Bank. Their stuff is pricey, but you can find good sales right now.

For day to day stuff get some kahkey(I know it's spelled wrong) and some polo, button down shirts.

If you have clients coming in then wear dress slacks.

I can't help it. The thought of him being nekked, dripping from head to toe with sweet and sour sauce just gets me so hot!

Bachrach is still around? I have a few 15 year old pink silk sweaters with your name on them Tony.

Nordstroms will take good care of you.

Dont be the guy at the office at the lower limit of the dress code. I always try to dress one level above my peers.

+100

It's not that much more money too step it up a notch. Better quality clothes last longer too. If you think people can't tell the difference, you're kidding yourself.

Ah, hold on. If you want to cheap out but still get more or less decent clothes, check out Filene's Basement, Loehmanns (sp?) and Nordstrom Rack. Quite often they have decent stuff for cheap.

+1

Appearance means alot, and it's an easy problem to address. Theres no excuse for dressing poorly when you need to make a good impression. Nothing in my closet, (short of my interview / wedding / funeral clothes), will cut it.

I do clean up pretty good when i want to though

I appreciate the suggestions guys.

Bachrach has some nice stuff. Most of my clothes come from there.

+1. Don't dress at the bottom of the office.

I work at a dot com and it is very relaxed here. You'll see people walking around in crocs and shorts, t-shirts and ball caps. I always wear slack and a nice dress shirt.

+1 to what Vcook said. Good quality clothes last a lot longer, too.

Carsons has nice selection for a good price and you can get a CC with no interest.

Jos. A. Banks is a good place to go too, but you will pay a bit more.

I wouldn't bother with men's warehouse.

Banana Republic or Brooks Brothers, both very nice and not too costly if you shop the outlets or sale rack.

To start, since you only are looking to spend $300-500, I wouldn't shop at Bachrach or Banana Republic, or you'll only be able to 3-4 "outfits." I'd personally go to Kohls or one of the other discount places. That'll at least get you a base of clothes, then start adding from there with the Banana Republic stuff.
