NetFlix? Blockbuster? Others?

There are some old threads about this from 2005, but I figured I'd see if what people think now.

I tried NetFlix for a couple months a couple years ago. It worked great for the trial and the first month or two, but then after using it a lot, they intentionally slow delivery. The service changed from getting a movie in a day or two to a few days to a week. I understand the cost, but if you advertise unlimited...

So, for those of you who are using these services now, are you pleased? How are the delivery times?

I'd like to be able to get HD DVD movies as well. Do both offer these? I have digital cable and can do on-demand movies on that--$3.99 for regular, $4.99 for HD. That's convenient, but would end up being more expensive I think.

I have Windows Media Center hooked up to the 1080p through X-box. So I could download movies via the Internet and watch them. I haven't done that yet, but maybe there are services that offer download to PC? It appears NetFlix does offer this but a limited number of hours based on the plan? Is the download 1080p?

Are there other plans where you can download movies and watch? That would seem the most convenient and cost effective.

I'll call NetFlix for more info and maybe do the free trial, although I'm hesitant to go with them again. But I don't know that BlockBuster is any better so that's why I wanted to ask for your opinions. Thanks!

i used to have a blockbuster account but i got sick and tired of always going there and having the movies and new releases i want to rent, already out. so i always got stuck with shitty movies. and any tv series dvds i want to watch theyll have like one season, etc. and i think that was like $20+ a month, for 3 dvd rentals from THAT store only. i couldnt rent from other chains.

so bout 2 weeks ago i joined netflix, pay 16.99 a month and have 3 rentals. the only thing i dont like is the wait cause its by mail. but other than that they have all the movies, they offer great dvd sales for 5.99 with the retail box without the stickers n shit on em like blockbuster sells with their prev-viewed dvds.

what im doing with the online viewing is, first off you have to have windows media player 11 and internet explorer 7. which kinda sucks so i cant watch from my mac/ibook or anything. but its nice cause i can watch high quality tv series and save my rentals for movies. but like i said the wait for online renting kinda sucks, to me at least because renting for me is like fast food. i get it when im craving it. so if im craving a movie friday night. forget about it. i have to have them ship it wednesday to get here friday. but once you get over that netflix is awesome.

Netflix rules, almost never out of stock, cheap enough, you get some films online which is nice for when you need something on short notice and once you get a queue of 30 or so films, you don't have to worry about it for a few months.

I've been using Netflix for a few months and I love it. I also watch HD-DVD, and they have a good selection. Service is very fast, usually next day for hard copies. I haven't noticed any slowdown, so maybe you just caught them in some growing pains, trying to keep up with a rapidly growing customer base.
Some of the plans offer unlimited streaming movies, so that might be good. I don't know what resolution they're offered in though.

I hate Blockbuster, and the only one in town here is a Franchise store, not a corporate one, so they don't participate in many of the promotions. I didn't find that out until I got socked with late fees.
I've also read that Blockbuster signed an exclusive deal with Sony to carry only Blu-ray as the HD format.

I have Netflix as well and like you Jack have experienced this magical delay after the first few months. I called and complained and threatened to go to the competition (Blockbuster) and they told me there was nothing they could do and that it was not intentional. They called my bluff and I've been using them for almost 3 years now. There's little thing that bother me about Netflix but I guess it's ok. If I found something else that was better I'd defenitley switch but I'm kind of stuck with them for now. I have rated over 1000+ movies on Netflix and there's not way to transfer all those ratings so that's another reason why I'm kinda stuck with them. Sometimes I watch so many new releases that there's nothing worth the time to watch so I just put my account on hold for a few months to let the new releases pile up the start up the account again so that's a nice feature. If you're looking for HD d/l's to your tv it's called pay per view at $6 a pop with comcast.

I've had Netflix for about a year... no complaints. The video on demand feature is cool when I don't have any movies on hand.

I was doing Blockbuster online for a long time until recently... When I signed up it was the same price as Netflix, but I don't know how the prices compare now. Blockbuster allows you to walk into the store and exchange your movies for free which was a major bonus if I didn't want to wait to receive more in the mail. Also, once you return the online movies to the store, your next movies are mailed out right away so you could get double the movies for free. I always received my movies within a few days and never had any issues with them.

I only canceled my membership due to Wal Mart and Target having some great movies on sale for $3-$5 each recently so I have about 50 DVD's I bought that I haven't seen yet. Once I catch up on those movies I will prolly sign up for Blockbuster again.

i've used both, and I prefered netflix. if you go to the store often you can feasibly get more movies from blockbuster, but the whole point is you dont need to go the store. I might go back on netflix next fall, I'm too busy right now but fall and winter are great times to knock out lots of movies/tvseries on disk.

Netflix download for PC requires their player which isn't compatable with Media Center. So that's not an option. Vongo is compatable but it appears that these downloaded movies are not hi-res. Instead they're more like VHS or close to DVD quality. Definitely not HD DVD.

I use Netflix! It is by far better than going to Blockbuster to rent movies! We are the worst anyways about getting movies back on time. We started off with the 3 movies at a time but ended up holding on to movies waaaaaay too long to consider paying that amount so we switch to 2 movies a month, 1 at a time. Which we have to put something in the que... So it works and is much more convenient. If you are really busy load up your que so you won't have an empty que and still get billed.

I've had both and actually prefer Blockbuster. I like having the option of going into the store on any night if I feel like getting a new movie and forgot to send it back in the mail. Plus even though I only pay for one movie at a time, I always have 2.
