Jury duty

I've been summoned for the first time to the downtown court(Daley Center?) Anyway, I've never been to one of these and never heard of anybody enjoying the experience. Here are a few questions for those who have done their civil duty:

1. How do I get out of it?

2. I heard you spend a lot of time sitting and waiting. Can I bring books, magazines, and my laptop?

3. Do they have Wifi?

4. Do they provide lunch or should I pack one?

Thanks to those that will actually provide a useful answer.

Don't be a citizen. It's worked for me. I just sent in a copy of my green card.

Getting out of it is hit or miss.

No laptop, but magazines or books are allowed.

Lunch should be provided.

This is all from experience in Kane County.

i've been getting out them for the past 10 years or so, by giving BS excuses.
i recently went for the first time a few months ago, and hate to say it, but i really enjoyed it. i felt good doing something for the community. i think you should give it a try.

you do spend A LOT of time sitting and waiting (the waiting around part is for your # to be picked as a juror)
so you can bring and they encourage you bring something to keep you busy including all those you mentioned.

i dont remember if they have Wifi, but i do know they have computers for jurors to use with internet access.

i believe they do provide lunch only in the court house cafeteria. dont know if you could leave though.
good luck.

I did it years ago at the Daley Center. We were able to leave for lunch.

I didn't mind it during the summer. Nice to be downtown on a weekday when it was bright blue skies outside, (but in weather like this, I'd rather be at work)

I got out of last year by sending my time sheet for the previous year during the same time period...I work about 350 hours in March alone so I guess they considered pulling me away from work during that time an "undue hardship".

Or you can go the Homer Simpson route and say you have "racial bias" mmmmm donuts

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

years ago when i was in the military and would get jury duty, i would write on the summons paper to return "he's on deployment". they never checked once and worked everytime. and before that, I would write "no hablo ingles". that works for shure!

Don't even show up. unless you got served papers or certified mail, they can't touch you. they would have to prove that you received a copy of the notice. therefor they cannot prosecute you for not showing up.

Daley Center Sucks.

Big room 2 tv's sit and wait you will be cut loose for lunch. Just check off yes to being in a lawsuit and if you are interviewed just tell them your military experience gives way to side with law enforcement.

I had jury duty last year at Old Orchard and they let me bring my laptop and even supplied me with power. No wifi but I had my aircard so I just used that. They let you bring your own reading materials and even had the TV going and a room with vending machines. They even let us go out side to smoke every hour or so under supervision. I have no idea what the Daley Center is like but get ready to pay at least $20 for parking and then get a check for maybe that much. Jury duty blows but everyone has to play their part. I heard you can get out of it by saying you're with the KKK???

In your case, they can't even prove that you can READ the card that came in the mail.

I got called several times and I actually wanted to serve, but pretty much the only defense lawyer in my small town was the same guy that had gotten me out of several MC tickets, so they sent me on my way every time. pschaw!

And by the way, ROFLMAO that you'd even ask if they serve you lunch. it's the government!
Usually there's no public wifi in gov't offices but I don't think they can keep you from working on your laptop-- you might call and ask on that one.

+1 If you don't have a real reason, do your part.

Now if it conflicts with a track day, thats another reason!
