people all fired up one way or the other are just being silly. by the time this all shakes out the winning players will be sub $100 all day. big deal. I have a toshiba A3 hd-dvd player. if bluray wins I'll just pick up one of those for cheap. in the mean time I have a quality upconverting DVD player and an HD-DVD player in one.

75% studio support and a 2-1 sales lead will be tough to overcome. I'm guessing one more attempt at a shot against Sony by trying to buy one of the exclusive studios to go neutral, but still could be over for HD DVD.

does this mean they're killing off their stupid THD format? BD on one side and HD-DVD on the other? wow, that was going to be major $$ for a movie disc

im pretty much thinking the same thing. HD-DVD is $250 at costco. if i end up needing both, no big deal. my tv has 3 HDMI 1.3 inputs.

Apple might be shipping their machines with Blu-Ray. That would really help Sony.

if you have the star wars trilogy on LD then it's worth keeping. If not, then junk it.

HD DVD Really Dead Now: Paramount Following Warner to Blu-ray-Only Party

ParamountGate.JPGFinancial Times is reporting that Paramount has a clause in its HD DVD exclusivity contract allowing them to bail from the sinking HD DVD ship if Warner defected to Blu-ray, and they are "poised" to do so.

Warner's switch already put 70 percent of Hollywood's output on Blu-ray—Paramount rolling Blu-ray too would leave Universal and Dreamworks as the last major studios in the HD DVD camp, promptly and undoubtfully closing the books on HD DVD's future in Hollywood. Imagine: Michael Bay is sipping a mojito somewhere with a smile on his face.

Paramount already made an announcement that they have no plans on getting out of their contract at this time.

"Paramount/DreamWorks responded to Warner's shift to Blu-ray exclusivity today (Jan 7th), saying that the studios have no plans to abandon the HD DVD format."

I'd be interested to see what kind of incentives, both format pushers, have been giving the studios for thier support.

It's quite simple. HD DVD needs to pony up and shell out some cash and snag a studio to their side or several smaller studios to get some momentum back. If they die quickly then it's an easy win for Blu. If they don't go away so quickly and dual formats remain for a while when Sony has to start worrying because they have put in a ton of money to fix a problem that just won't go away. How long can these studios stay invested in a format that only 3% of consumers use? The fight seems more important for Sony, so I'd bet on them doing whatever it takes to finish off HD DVD. Toshiba has little to lose, say "oh well" and start making BR players. If Sony goes under, say bye bye to the PS3 ever being anything but last gens Xbox. They will remain a distant 3rd which they keep losing ground in their console sales every day on, developers make less exclusives for them, and now you can pay $500 for a last place console with an obsolete player or snag yourself a cheaper Wii or 360.

I believe Toshiba paid $150 mil for Paramount to go exclusive and inside Sony sources say they shelled out $500 mil for Warner. Fox was also paid some undisclosed amount to remain BluRay.

I guess I'm confused. Does Sony make money if Blu-Ray wins the Format war? Do they get some cut of each DVD sale using Blu-ray technology or is it just a head start since they already produce the Blu-ray DVD players?

Is it patent pending technology where Sony only gets a cut for so many years?

sony is a bunch of cunts that i hoped would lose the war. and now theyre buying their way through. the money they spend means nothing if they hold the next gen format for years to come. theyll make it all back and control the market.
