Chills you think this is going to be a cancellation fest tonight or tomorrow morning? Got a friend flying out in the morning to DFW.

The earlier he flies the better. We are going to see snow throughout the morning, then it'll begin to clear in the afternoon. However, tomorrow's flights will be packed since there are so many cancellations today. So in the afternoon (and since its a Friday) there will be a lot of aircraft trying to get to and from ORD which will cause delays.

DFW will see gusty winds in the afternoon which will probably slow arrivals.

As long as he leaves ORD before 11ish he shouldn't have a problem.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Nope. Incorrect on all 3 counts.

ORD arrivals are being delays by an average of 4.5 hours. MDW arrivals are seeing average delays around 1.5 hours.

Delays will probably not get any worse. When delays get this bad even though there are already tons of cancellations all the airlines can do is cancel more flights. They can't really take any longer delays because then they get into pilot flight time and the amount of hours they can be "on." That's just one of many reasons.

So if you're flying into ORD today you might want to find a place to sleep tonight.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Don't forget weather at the destination as well. I don't know how many times I've heard people bitching at the gate. They can't leave because of a weather delay, but it's sunny and calm outside. They don't grasp that they can't land at the other end because of the hurricane!

My parents were on an 8:05 from Midway to Hartford, got pushed back to midnight, they're going to get in at about 2am, well after the car rental place closes, so more waiting on the ass end... I'm glad I'm not my dad tonight, my mom is a real handful when tired.

For ORD I think we are sitting around 81 just for this morning.

MDW has a bunch.

The Northeast is about to get slammed.

Not a good day to fly.

I jumpseated in from Philly yesterday, and it sucked. I was going to get on an 11:35 USAirways to ORD, and it canceled. Jumped on the 1:35 flight, and we had a 5:43 wheels up time, and that got pushed to 6:45. We made it off the ground in philly around 6:30pm. After the drive to my house I walked in a 9:30 last night, and that was after waking up at 3:00am on the east coast. What a long day!

The snow is abating, which of course is a good thing.

Now the problem for your flight, Alison, is northwest winds. If the winds stay from the NW and get over 13mph then ATC at ORD has to use a f*cked up runway configuration that limits the number of flights that can land hourly.

Even though the forecast says NW I'm thinking we'll see more NE winds. The Low around which this storm is centered has moved SE of us. The air circulates CCW around a Low and angles toward the center, too. If the Low was NE or E of us we'd see more NW winds, but it is in the wrong spot.

Anyway, I hope you're on-time, too.

Like this:

Low rotates counter-clockwise. Air flows into the center and upward away from the ground. Picture your toilet flushing, but going up instead of down.

I had a last minute invite to go rock climbing. I love racing on Forza2, but rock climbing always trumps Xbox.
