Got a job offer today...

So my boss asked me if I would like to work in Trinidad. It would be a promotion. I have until monday to let him know my thoughts. Up until today I had no idea where the hell Trinidad was and I still really know nothing about it. Anybody know about this place? City I would be working/living in is Port of Spain. Accepting the position would mean that I would have to work there atleast 18 months, possibly longer. I am a Chef for a big hotel corp.

I would take it if I were you. Not only does it look good for a chef to be worldwide, it's a nice vacation spot that you can call home for a couple years.

It's a tropical island pretty close to Aruba. Average temp is 80 F all year round. Not much to do on your free time except go to the beach and bar hopping at night. It is NOT like the US virgin islands.

Anybody got some real info, like cost of living, crime rate, race tracks, riding activities, etc.

I get these opportunities every once in a while, usually a lateral move though. I've been informed today that this is one offer of many that will come my way in the next few weeks/months. I guess I have earned my keep in the last seven years with the company, I'm looking forward to the potential 50-80% pay increase that comes with the next step in my career. It's nice to know my work is noticed and appreciated.

It's a good offer but how about if you dont like it? Can you come back? Everyone is saying do it, I'll do it in a heart beat and once in a life time...the real qs is..Can you survive out there alone with no fam or friends? Think about. I guess it's just me since im so close to my family. I wouldnt relocate for any job. It's cool to be in 80F weather and see the clear water of the ocean but that doesnt last long ,then you get tired of it. You'll just be going to work and back home. Once in a while step out with co-workers and make friends but I dont wanna burst your bubble...Maybe its a good opportunaty and try something different. Everyone needs a change in life once in a while.

This is something that requires more time to think about than just 2 days. Hope you make a wise choice and Good luck !

Cricket is bad ass!! I was in Ireland during the Cricket World Championships or some shit, it was all cricket all the time on tv. I'd wake up, watch half an hour of a match, leave for 8 hours and go out, come back and the same match was still on tv. I had no idea what it was but picked it up pretty quickly, it is better than baseball. They take that shit seriously too, a day after a country lost someone went into the coach's hotel room and killed him.

I turned down the offer today, boss said he is actively putting the word out there about me, so I should have other ops soon. We will see how it pans out.

Also, Trinidad is supposed to be pretty shitty, especially were I would have to be living and working. When the hotel recently opened, a few of the folks at my work went to help out. They were escorted to the hotel by armed guards and told not to leave the hotel. I guess the recent influx of big money and big business is eating up land that that the poor would live on. Angery local squaters with no place to squat = crime o' plenty.

While I agree with the others about moving to other countries for experience, I think you made the right call. Trinidad is a dangerous place to be...

But if they offer you Sweden or Spain and you pass it up, I'll personally kidnap your 'motard and sell it on ebay! :
