lunar eclipse tonight

time to go grab a blanket, break out the sweats, lay out in the yard or at the beach and just stare at the sky tonight. do something crazy/romantic and blame it on the moon.

mmm time to call up teh gf's friends and make it a hot tub night.

Willard: When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. I'd wake up and there'd be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said "yes" to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there; when I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle.

9:05 p.m. EDT (01:05 UT May 16), the eclipse will officially begin as the moon enters Earth's outer shadow, the penumbra. About 10 p.m. EDT the eastern edge of the moon will dip into Earth's umbra, initiating the slow descent into darkness. More than an hour later, at 11:13 p.m. EDT, totality begins as the entire moon is submerged in Earth's shadow. After 53 minutes, totality ends when the moon's orbit starts to ease the satellite back into sunlight. The eclipse ends at 2:15 a.m. EDT

Storms in Kansas? Hard to believe. I lived in Olathe,KS for 8 years. It stops storming just longing enough for the tornado to pass and then starts again.

Of course, watching the neighbors wouldn't be the same without it.

Nah, actually that's just my long lens. Lunar photography is kind of tough, got some good shots last night. It's fun to try different things. I'd like to try and get some lightning this summer, we'll see.

In its rotation the shadow exited from left to right. That half shot is the exit. I was up late.

I got some neat shots duing a full moon a while back with the D30 but I couldn't blow it up enough because of the resolution. I haven't tried it yet with the 10D (much better camera). Getting the correct exposure is tricky. Nice shot!

Thanks guys. It's a Nikon.

Yeah Dave, the tricky thing is getting the exposure right. You've got to love digital for that!

I do have a telescope, one of the huge day-time ones. I always intended to get a camera mount but never did.

How on earth did you take those pics of the moon without a camera mount? My dad does astral photography and that would be at least a 1/2 second exposure - kind of tough do holding the camera. Or do you have a tripod? Those are nice pics, for sure, and I'm not calling bullsh!t - yet. just kidding ya.
