I agree. Why should you have to upgrade? That is a decent OS. The bullshit is apple forcing you to constantly upgrade to a new version of iTunes.

When my Rio finally dies, I might get an Archos or an iRiver. I refuse to buy an iPod. I gave my wife one, but only because I won it free from CDW.

windows 2000 is probably the best piece of software microsoft has released.

its a shame they went the route they did, when win2k came out i thought the developers there had finally stopped smoking crack.

When I got my first iPod I was using this program http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/ instead of iTunes. In fact it was less annoying than iTunes overall as it allowed you to just drag and drop music onto it and didn't give you any DRM bullshit. Not sure if it still supports 2000 though (it used to) or if it supports the new iPod's yet.

A lot of the more recent apps from Microsoft and other vendors no longer run on 2k. Agreed that 2k is a stable OS but it did take four SPs to get there.

Just do a search in google for the older versions of Itunes. I am sure there are plenty of places that offer the download for free. I had to do this when a newer version did not work on my system. Uninstall and go back to an earlier version.

I think his problem is that his new iPod won't work with the old iTunes.

There were ways to get software to install on 2000.

Some only needed temporary registry hacks to set the windows version that the installer reads.. after installing, set it back.

Google for something along those lines.. you might get lucky.

I was going to post something like this yesterday.
I'm a Mac user, as a graphic designer, I have used other platforms, and have found the Mac to be the best tool for the job I have.

My employer gave everyone 8GB iPod Touches as a holiday bonus this weekend. I got it home, and immediately plugged it in. WTF. Needs the newest version of iTunes. So I downloaded it. WTF. iTunes needs the most current version of OSX. I'm still running Panther. WTF. My new iPod has a dead fucking pixel. Argh!

So Sunday I go to an Apple store to exchange it. "Sorry, you need to speak with a Genius, and there are no more openings today." What?? Basically you're telling me that the Apple store staffs 2 people who actually know anything, and the rest of you are idiots. Awesome.

I went home, checked the other store on the other side of town, they have openings, so I sign up for a spot... in the middle of confirming my appointment the site kicks me out. WTF! So now I have to call to make sure it went through. It did.

So I wait a couple hours for my appointment and drive over to Bayshore, totally get lucky and find a parking spot right in front of the store... then I wait for 45 minutes. WTF. Again, there's two people who actually know what they're doing, and then the rest of the store is staffed by 10 idiots who are doing *nothing*. Finally speak to someone, and it turns out I didn't even need to talk to one of their fucking "geniuses" - they never even looked at the one I was trading in to confirm the dead pixel.

Traded up for a 16GB and had to buy Leopard for $129 so that I can run the stupid thing. Fuck Apple.

On the otherhand, I'm totally digging the thing. We see what happens when the novelty wears off and if it turns into a totally ineffective expensive paperweight.

I use 4.6 and don't even own an iPod.

Love the sharing function at work. Down side is that you have to be in the same LAN subnet.

I was the same way and I had an Iriver and it died 2 days after the warranty was up. My Bro-in-law also had an Iriver and it was in for repairs ever 5 months. After I saw Tony's Jeep with his new radio where you can plug the Ipod into it and control the Ipod from the radio while keeping the Ipod in the center council I was sold. i could never do that with my Iriver. I always had to use the Aux jack for it and pull the Iriver out to change songs.
All the stuff they sell for Ipods are great, the radios that are set up for them, all the docking stations for home and all the other stuff. Apple did a great marketing job on the Ipod.
