gasp! airfare!

As many of you know I travel a lot for work, but I have a trip coming up that is seriously going to be the mother of all trips. I just went online to book my flight and OMG is all I can say! Granted, it's business class, and it's not coming out of MY pocket... but still, this is insanely hilarious

I recently priced out a trip to china for first class and it was 22,000. Business class was 9k. Thank god for frequent flyer miles.

(1) as per federal government regulations I can fly one class up if I'm going overseas or on certain lengthy flights (I think over 6 hours?)-- that's business. So yes, it's your tax dollars at work

(2) no, they won't ask me to fly coach because it's a gov't travel rule.

(3) yes, I get to keep the miles for myself. that's why I stick with one airline all the time.

(4) my only question is whether I can expense some snow boots for the alaska trip. My jcrew ones barely held up in the wisconsin debacle of '08

Sweeet. I was supposed to go to Hong Kong with like a weeks notice and we have the same policy about length of flight converts to business class. It was going to be like $16k

it wasn't a mistake; it's about 3 weeks away, and it's a business class trip. I choose to stay w/ american because (1) it's a preferred carrier for my firm and (2) i'm allowed to retain the miles for myself

Considering the timeframe and business class to Germany, I actually do not think that is all that outrageous. When you consider a hotel will charge you $1000 for a days use of a video projector, or $7,000 for a T1 line for 4 days, $10K for about 25,000 business class miles is not bad.

I thnk your #'s are a little inflated. Which hotel is this. I work in the business and nobody in the Chicago area charges that much.

I don't think the $10k is outrageous; I've just never dropped that kind of money in one fell swoop without even second-guessing it. I've also never had an airfare like this! It's just funny to me.

you know, I thought that too, but my current trip- SAT-->ORD-->BWI-->SAT was way cheaper than 2 back-to-back round trips. Some of these multi-city trips aren't too bad. In this case, it's the business-class that's upping the fare. The economy fare for this multi-city itinerary is $1604. Pretty reasonable, I think.

Business class does rack up the price of tickets. FYI You can fly to Bejing from Chicago stopping in Tokyo for 90k miles. (Business class)
