I wonder how much trouble you'd get in for doing that around here?

Life has no instruction manual. Parts and labor can be impossible to find. Many go down the road with parts that are in need of service. A breakdown is eventual.

Prolly a few years at least. In areas like that with the ground the way it is, derailments are common. I work for a railroad, and we have a derailment a day in our yard. It was built on a swamp, and the rail sinks. And I do not get on any train that I cannot stop. True story.
