Going on Strike tomorrow!!

Yep, the teacher coop I work for has decided to go on strike starting tomorrow. This sucks!!! I just love losing pay involuntarily, I am fine with what they are offering in our negotiations. But, I can't cross the lines or I will work in a living hell. Totally sucks being in this position.

My school took my keys and locked me out of my email. I feel like some sort of criminal, the took other teachers' laptops. I have a desktop so they didn't take that.

When I was a part of the local mechanics union for a short time they harrassed the shit outta me for not paying my dues even though I left IL to work and live in FL. They kept tracking me down and bugging the bejeezus outta me. Fookin leeches, I will never join a union again. Oh and when I asked my union rep to negotiate my pay to what I should be getting paid for my skill level all he did was say stupid shit to my boss and made me look stupid. I HATE the union.

Only Unions I've been in sucked balls. Sooner or later I'm gonna get hooked up with one that pays me alot for doing as little as possible.

Can't you just say you're not striking if you want to keep working?

I get top pay in the union job I have but I bust my friggen ass. 13 - 14 hour days w/11hrs driving & 10 hr rest periods in between, on the road 6 - 7 days straight before 48 consecutive hrs off. Try that for a while before you say union people are lazy. And, the "us against them" attitude between the mgt and the drivers is a pain in the ass. Not to mention that the company is constantly trying to bust the union. The union does help though if you have a problem like an accident or injury or such where any other company would just fire you. Unions are good AND bad.

Yeah it sucks but you have to stick it out.

I would just make sure those that voted for it are walking the line with you and not taking a holiday they are worse than those that cross.

Good luck to you.

Until you get on the fiscal side of project management, you can't even begin to understand the amount of money squandered (and I'm talking public dollars here) because of union and other construction requirements. It's unbelievable.

Until you see how some employers run rough shod over employees you would not understand the need for unions.

Our district striked for 6 days earlier this year. They now get to make up all 6 days in June - If I had the teachers package in Dist #2 I would happier than a hunter with a nice over/under and a good bird dog in November in South Dakota in a cattail slough with a slight face wind.... you get my point, I know you do.

GL with the strike - sorry union folks - I hate them.

Ah but the exact same could be said in the opposite situation from the standpoint of a developer/owner in a construction venture

Don't fall into the "All unions are bad", trap the repubs have set. Every local is different and so are the people in that local. With teachers it's the issue of tenure that makes them so bulletproof. Not all teachers achieve tenure. As a matter of fact, a lot of districts pretty much fire the teachers every year and rehire them the next year just so they never achieve tenure.

I bet a lot of you are thinking right about now that someone must have put a pod next to SloRolls bed last night.

Unless your non tenured, then it doesn't matter how good you are the union wont do anything for you against said principle

I worked in the Teamsters union in college for a can making company and have nothing but good experiences from it. When I went back to college and started doing interships in my field I never heard from them again, but if I wanted to make a career out of being a scroll shear and throwing around tin plate I would have made some decent money w/o a college education. Not all unions are bad, but I can see how some undesireables get protected by the collective.
