Other sushi places?

I know this has been discussed but in going to many different places I realized that usually it's the smaller family owned places that have the best food for the best money. Yesterday Hunny and I had dinner at Abashiri on Lake St just West of 355. The quality of the rolls and sushi was about what I've had at Wild Fish and some of your other big places that are charging $15-$20 for a roll. There's another place in that area that's simply called "Sushi Bar" Those 2 places along with one that's further up north which some here have been to (Rok Bonki)...the all sorta blow the big places like Wild Fish and Blu Coral outta the water. Seems like with those places you pay more for the atmosphere than anything else. Anyone know some small places that are local to them but good besides the big names?

for normal sushi nothing to fancy. believe it or not super walmart has a sushi chief and as you know EVERYTHING is fresh and he makes them right there in front of you.

other places are starting to follow. there is a strats & vantiel (spelling?) super market by us and i get my little fix there instead since its a super market with what i think is better food products then walmart.

i mainly dig the California rolls.

Excellent sushi in a nice low profile setting at Swordfish.

Sushi Thaime on 95th in Oak Lawn is excellent.

In the city, I like 'sushi mikes' (tanoshii) in edgewater neighborhood.

Kinda for for you, but my neighborhood has some good places. Tanoshii on Clark and Bryn Mawr is REALLY good. If you sit at the bar, the chef (Sushi Mike) will make whatever he feels like based off your preferences. No soy sauce, he makes his own sauce for each roll. Another plus, it's BYOB and he'll drink with you.

Or there are a few places on Broadway inbetween Foster and Granville that are cheap and pretty good.

eh I forgot, I think that place is Korean owned so not very genuine. Funny most of the sushi places are owned by Koreans and are actually better than many of the Japanese owned ones I've been too.

Abe, the owner of Sai Cafe has another restaurant on Logan and California in Logan Square called Hachi, its less packed than Sai and equally as good.

Ever try the Scallop Appetizers at Sai? Friggen unbelievable.

Jenya took me to a place on Randolph and Halsted called Izuni or something like that. It was very good. I still like Butterfly the best though which is on Grand. I have not had really good sushi outside of the city just FYI

The BEST sushi place(no exageration) is Wild Tuna in Naperville. Small, trendy, family owned. The head chef/owner travels the world to get new ideas on sushi. Once you become a regular and he gest to know your taste, he will start making you unique items not on the menu. For us (my brother and family) he makes us something called an ultimate crunchy. Their Rolls covered in these crazy rice balls. Never had them before...and they are now my fav!
